With some saying Sterling Moore is moving to safety for next season that puts us at 7 potential safeties for next season:

Sterling Moore
Matt Johnson
Barry Church
JJ Wilcox
Danny McCray
Jakar Hamilton
Will Allen

Obviously we aren't going to carry 7 on the roster, what is your prediction?

My prediction is: Moore stays at corner, and one of the young guys will get put on PUP or IR with an injury during camp

My prediction for 10 DBs is:
Claiborne
Carr
Scandrick
BW Webb
Sterling Moore CB/Safety

Will Allen
Barry Church
Matt Johnson
JJ Wilcox
Jakar Hamilton

Probably gets cut unless some injuries occur in training camp:
Danny McCray: He signed a Restricted FA tender but it is not guaranteed. It will be difficult to make the team as a Special Teams only player with a 1.3M salary.

Micah Pellerin will be the surprise contender for the starting free safety position.

If you're being serious, please tell us why you believe that. Thanks.

I just don't see it. Dallas seems to love McCray despite his poor play at safety, so I think he plays out his tender while Hamilton goes on the PS to develop.

Of course, we do have a different special teams coach, so maybe the love went away when DeCamillas did.

I think Hamilton will get scooped up before he makes it to the PS. Rumor has it he had a 3rd grade on him and both the eagles and Giants were high on him as well. I think this kid has a serious chance of competing for the other safety spot. I think that it all depends on Wilcox development. I think that one of these 2 guys ends up starting. Call it a guy feeling.

Do you have specific knowledge of this player or is this just a funny because he is at the bottom of the depth chart?

2011 Shrine Game standout and All MEAC as corner. Ran a 4.45 at combine then pulled a hammy.

Pellerin has decent size (6'0 195) for a zone corner and good speed, but nothing special stands out in his transition to safety.

Wilcox has more upside IMO. And Wilcox has at least played the safety spot at some level.

I expect Church to be the definite. He was getting more praise than anyone not named Dez in training camp last offseason. I think we have a Raw guy beside him as it is a straight competition between J.J. Wilcox and Matt Johnson.

Let's not forget that Church is raw also, with only a few full games experience. This is the one positional group we really have to hope and pray someone surprises us in camp.

I will have to go with Church and Matt.

I'm pretty interested to see how this plays out. There are so many factors that are very difficult to predict. First Off, I think Moore stays at CB to start. I one or more of the rooks gets hurt or just stinks, then we revisit the idea.

Church
Church was really starting to show something at the beginning of the year. However, two things concern me. One is the obvious injury, but the other is that sometimes new guys will come in and make some nice strides, but then have problems again after other teams get more film on them and learn how to attack. We saw that with McCray. Granted, Church played better than McCray EVER did, but the problems with McCray really began to surface in the later games, not right out of the gate. This makes me temper my expectation with Church. He simply didn't play enough games for other teams to learn how to exploit his potential weaknesses.

For this reason, I don't think he's a lock to start. If he comes back from the Achilles 100%, I'd like to see him start, but not counting on it.

Johnson
I think we'll find out pretty soon what we've got with him. This may be total speculation, but I'm gonna guess that if he gets hurt, it will be early on. I'm hoping they've been working with him on training to avoid these various muscle pulls, and if that's been corrected, then he's right in the mix.

McCray
Unlike most, I like the guy. He's really a standout ST player, but if both rookies show well, he's probably gone.

Allen
He's the safe bet to be starting early in the year. I think that we'll try to get some of the other guys in in certain spots to gain experience. Maybe by mid-season Johnson, or even Wilcox or Hamilton, get more playing time.

Wilcox
Well, I con't say I know anything by personal experience here, but all I hear is that he has a really high ceiling but need seasoning. This is a guy that could become a great player for us, but could also just tease. I'm going to guess that he gets on the field on D at some point during the season, but only in specific packages.

Hamilton
From what I've read, Hamilton is far more NFL ready than Wilcox and could actually be more ready than Johnson to play. I've also heard that he's not exactly an RKG. So I went looking for what kind of problem he supposedly had and couldn't find any. Maybe academics? Looks like he had a tough road is all. Apparently some had him rated in the 4th round, so that's interesting.

TL;DR?
I think the guys who start the season won't be the same as the one's who finish it. If all three of our Unknowns (Johnson,Wilcox,Hamilton) show enough, then McCray gets cut. Church will either be one of the starters or ends up cut as well.

In addition to being "raw", Church was not all that fast to begin with and now he is rehabbing a serious leg injury. Not all Achilles injuries are alike but there is no guarantee that he comes back 100%.

Yeah its kinda hard to be optimistic about the position group as of right now, with nothing but a very raw small school rookie and a mediocre vet added to the mix. Add Church and Matt's situations, and you got a recipe for question marks.

Our CBs will have to play lights out with this safety crew, putting alot of pressure on them unfortunately. Just hoping for a miracle, at least we have vets that can start at other positions, but at safety all we have is question marks.

[FONT="Times New Roman","serif"]Church, Johnsonand Wilcox are box safeties; their primary skill set being bringing the wood. Eachof those guys will be exposed, as McCray has been exposed in coverage. Pellerin possesses a skill set, the abilityto cover and get his hands on the football, sorely missing in the Dallassecondary. With coaching at the professional level coaching, Pellerin has as good achance to make a 53 man roster at safety as the other contenders. Truth is, after having playedon offense for three years, Wilcox will need all the coaching he can get and then some to be ready to be a full time starter at safety. Never quite got the hype with Church. I think after watching the Elam/Sensabaugh fiasco 2 years ago anyone who appeared to be somewhat competent would garner alot of praise at that position. I like what I've been reading about the rookie Wilcox and I hope he's a starter next season.

LOL I got confused as well and thought Church was a FS but both of them are SS. I forgot that they had moved Sensabaugh to FS this past season..:D

Prediction:
SS Church
FS Allen

Hopefully the rooks can step up and start by mid season but barring injury, I see them waiting in the wings for at least a year...

This and lets hope JJ Wilcox is the next Darren Woodson/Sean Taylor type on the field.
