A couple of weeks ago, Sports Illustrated NFL writer Doug Farrar was nice enough to invite me to appear on his fantastic podcast, to talk about the draft eligible defensive linemen in this year's class. During the course of our conversation, he hipped me to a guy by the name of, you guessed it, Preston Smith, who played ball at Mississippi State. This Smith kid had flown totally under my radar, so I hadn't watched a lick of film on him. However, I made it a point to look him up and see what he was all about as soon as the call was over.

For this breakdown, I went to Draft Breakdown and watched Smith play against LSU, Texas A&M, Auburn and Kentucky. Those represented the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh games of Mississippi State's season, respectively.

I like Smith a lot. He is strong. With all these tweeners, there is no doubt that Smith is a DL. And you can also slide him inside and he gets a lot.of pressure there as well. Big fan. Not sure about his hustle, but I don't think there's a red flag or anything. Like him better than Kareem Martin last year

He seems like a safe pick but upside might be limited. He looks better inside. He quickness is average at best.

I like him a lot....but as a 3 tech. Not sure he's going to bring much to the table as a 4-3 DE. If he could keep his weight around 280-285 he could be a nice presence as an interior pass rusher

Agreed. He reminds me a bit of Crawford, actually. He's got a ton of power and looks good at DT

I echo the sentiment here, inside is where he belongs. Early on it seemed he may sneak into back half of first round, but the hype has quieted. Probably a mid 2nd rounder, maybe late 2nd?

I'd say mid second. Like Ealy last year

Wouldn't mind a small trade down and then taking him. He and Odiggy are two who are pretty realistic picks, but Smith is not near the athlete Odiggy is. One has a high ceiling higher bust factor the other is a much more safe pick and lower ceiling, not sure I can pick one over the other. One thing is neither really is a great pass rusher.

Forgot about this guy. There are going to be a lot of options for us there tomorrow.

Preston Smith is a legit Day 1 starter on this squad. A prospect without major health or off field concerns.

Could represent real value in the 2nd round with a slight Trade Down.

I think he'd make a fantastic 27th pick for us if he is BPA,..., and consider this, Smith at 27, Gregory drops to 60...how's that for improving a Dline..
