If I remember correctly, our special teams have looked awful for many of the preseason games over the past few years. Am I wrong?

Our regular season special teams haven't been anything to write home about for sure, but it seems like during the regular season, they seem to get it together and make it work.

Yes? No?

Rich Biascia can into DAL last year after leading SD to the worst ranked ST play in the League. Previous ST's were excellent. Last years and every year forward with Rich B will SUCK

Thanks. I feel like every preseason it's the same old song.

I guess people just need to remember that:

1) Most players on special teams during the preseason won't even be on the roster during the regular season.

2) Even one blown lane assignment by one of these aforementioned guys going to be cut can create disaster.

3) Lane assignments and blocking on special teams is fundamentally simple and relatively easy to correct.

That's how I feel anyways. I think that the Cowboys use the preseason games as an extension of practice and training camp. For evaluation purposes only. I think scoring is probably irrelevant in the coaches mind, as they are using these games to get some film on their younger guys and use it to coach them up. They want to see how players respond in certain situations.

I guess I'm just not worried in the least when it comes to the scoreboard during preseason.

I vaguely recall everyone screaming from the hill tops that the special teams would be the death of us, but the coverage teams last year were good. However, I felt like CJ Spillman was out best special teams player, followed by Dwayne Harris.

Yeah, they were definitely two of our best. We may regress a little on ST, but I think it'll be good enough to where it's not the deciding factor of our season.

Yea, hoping McCray can replace one of the 2, but I doubt Whitehead is ready to contribute that much.

You're not only wrong, you're extremely wrong.

In 2010, the year BEFORE Bisaccia went to the Chargers, they had the worst special teams in the league (32nd in special teams DVOA).

In 2011, Bisaccia's first season as the Chargers' special teams coordinator, they improved to 23rd in special teams DVOA -- and were 16th in weighted DVOA, which means they were playing much better as the season went along.

In 2012, Bisaccia's second season with the Chargers, they improved to eighth in special teams DVOA -- and were sixth in weighted DVOA.

So in two short seasons, he took the worst special teams in the NFL and turned them into one of the top eight special teams units -- and they were continuing to improve each season.

Really? I remember them saying he was brought in because in SD he had some very good ST's.

Bisaccia came to Dallas for the 2013 season. This will be his 3rd season here.

Remember the coach we lost to the Bears, his ST had some up and down games.

I guess I'm just not worried in the least when it comes to the scoreboard during preseason.

There are more coaching points derived from failed plays than from successful plays. Parcells talked about it back when he was here. He would do things like send in the defensive calls late or not at all just to see how they responded and to create coaching points. Most coaches won't discuss those issues.

There is no way to predict special teams based on the preseason other than the returners and kickers. There are just too many players that won't make the 53. The ST coach does not even know who will make the team. He does not know if he should have McCray or Keith Smith in a critical position because they probably won't both make the roster.

Other than the kicker, I have always believed there is a direct correlation between S.T. play and the quality of depth on the team. As this team becomes deeper, the S.T. play will become better.

Well, I guess that pretty much does it for this thread.
