Dallas Cowboys

Best pick: I'm a big fan of Arkansas running back Felix Jones, who went 22nd in the first round. He is a home-run threat every time he touches it.

Questionable move: Hard to find one. They had a good two days, but taking tight end Martellus Bennett in the second round might be it. With Jason Witten on the roster, that was a luxury pick.

Second-day gem: Corner Orlando Scandrick has nice cover skills. Were it not for some attitude questions, he might have been taken higher than the fifth round.

Overall grade: A. With two first-round picks, it was hard to mess things up. Getting corner Mike Jenkins after Jones fills a need.

6. Tell me that wasn't a tough decision when the Cowboys found themselves faced with Felix Jones AND Rashard Mendenhall at the 22nd pick. The feeling was that Mendenhall was too much like Marion Barber and that Jones gave them an element they lack. So they chose Jones, even though Mendenhall ranked higher on most boards. The move to go up to the 25th pick to take cornerback Mike Jenkins was smart. With two picks and one round, Dallas gained two impact players who should contribute immediately

Ten biggest winners

7. Jerry Jones, owner, Dallas Cowboys -- He found his "Wow Factor" with Pacman Jones but wisely brought a safety net along just in case. That would be Mike Jenkins, the cornerback who shouldn't have been there at the 25th position but was, taken by the Cowboys when they traded to get him.

Five quotes to remember

4. "This isn't one of the biggest risks I've taken" -- Dallas owner Jerry Jones on the trade for Pacman Jones.

Five reasons to attend the 2009 draft

2. Appeal Pacman Jones' latest suspension in person with Roger Goodell.

Except from Cowboy fans, I haven't really heard anybody say anything bad about our draft.

I was on the way home listening to ESPN and a Cowboy fan came on and was using the "Mendanhall should have been taken" bit and the guys on there blasted him for it.

Yeah, the author writes for The Sports Network website (?) and lives in, ahem, Philadelphia PA.

There could be a touch of negative bias in his writing.

He picks on us for Jenkins character issues yet here is what he has to say about the Giants (who picked Manningham):

Bottom Line: The champs addressed their major needs in the secondary, and otherwise acquitted themselves well by selecting value.

Grade: A-

He might be a NYFG fan and not a Philly fan, afterall.

The fix was in. We could have had the Chiefs' draft and it still would have been a "D."

If you value his opinion something is seriously wrong...:laugh2: That guy is still sore that former Cowboy players hated his guts.

I just hope Pacman read that. Maybe it'll fire him up come season time and prove any doubters wrong.

Pacman won't have any more trouble. He's sworn off of hitting strippers with his fist (open hand only) and has promised a "hands-off" approach when getting a lap dance.

That and the fact that he rented an apartment that has a pole in the living room for his stayover guests should keep him on the straight and narrow.

Plus, I think Jerry wrote a clause into his new 4 year contract about Pac wearing a chastity belt on weekends and at all times during the offseason, so the odds of him getting in a bind have been drastically reduced.

I'm not worried at all.

I actually feel better about this draft having heard Skip Bayless give it only a C grade. He is the biggest idiot sports writer in the US. Guy is certifiable.

Not only on the basis of what we actually drafted, but there wasn't a 4th rd. pick in the entire universe that could touch trading for Pacman from the Titans for what we gave up.

Getting him for a bag of beans is like having drafted 3 #1's.

Yes, it will be a while before we know if Pacman can pan out and play and be what he has been in the past.

But heck, we're still waiting for Bobby Carpenter to do the same and we gave up a ton more to take him than we coughed up for Pacman.

This draft is just potentially thru the roof with the changes it's going to bring to add to the weapons offensively, on KO and PR teams and defensively with Jenkins and Pacman at the CB slots and Scandrick, too.

Dallas has just done what I thought was possibly the impossible in taking a 13-3 team and taking it to a next level with drafting/trading for these guys.

This draft was one of those deals where you either got too cute and tried to do too much and possibly roll snake eyes or sit back and play the hand we were dealt and take what was there.

Dallas needs to be congratulated for staying the course when so many things were suggested pre-draft about how they could best improve themselves.

Instead, they took the best players on the board that fit their specific needs and never reached to do it.

This 2008 draft helps make up for several past drafts and player selections that were not good under BP and the team was paying a price keeping them.

Underachievers like Fasano, Ayodele, Julius Jones, Nate Jones, Jaque Reeves and dead wood like Tyson Thompson, Ferguson Jenkins and Keith Davis are now gone.

In their places are Mike Jenkins, Bennett, Felix Jones, Scandrick, Tashard Choice plus Zach Thomas and PacMan Jones via trade or FA.

Wow.

What a great off-season so far for this team. And it's not yet over as there maybe some unexpected cuts coming from teams now after the draft and June that could really help even more.

It's all good, folks.

Now if they can settle the outstanding contracts for Hamlin and MBIII and just concentrate on getting these new guys integrated into the team..

..we look in very good shape for '09.

The only thing that could make it better would be to see TG start to make signs of a comeback as we head toward TC.

Too much to ask..?
