The league's owners will vote on a proposal next week to hand out 5-yard penalties to any players spiking the ball on the field of play. I like that rule. I'm a big proponent of celebrating -- more so than the NFL suits -- but what good does a spike do after a first down or a big catch? All it does is slow down the game. It's time for it to go.

Ridiculous. Is this that common to actually make a rule or is the NFL once again pushing out its stuffy chest again?

Many times it is done out of frustration. I don't see many very foolish players actually SPIKING the ball after a big play. Now, that silly spinning thing is another thing entirely.

This is an emotional game.

I can understand if it happens when time is an issue, but let's let the players play. They are not robots.

guess they have nothing better to do. i'm fine with spiking the ball, but get rid of all the other stupid dancing they do on the field.

I like any rule designed to make the game move a little faster. This seems a stupid way to do that -- it doesn't happen that much and the gain you get is tiny.

I think spiking the ball or tossing it into the stands- should be the only celebrations allowed in the End Zone. All of them look so stupid anyway.

Let's get rid of players high-fiving as well, cause that takes up time.

The NFL seems to be striving towards the NBA's standards in terms of regulating its players and it's very annoying.

So they allow the Greenbay players to jump in the stands ...... but they think spiking the ball is hurting the game ....

this is ********.

spiking the football is part of the game. i remember playing football as a kid with my friends, maybe when I was 7 or 8 years old, and the first thing I would do after scoring was spike the football...why is it so wrong to celebrate?!

Might as well pass a rule to ban emotions too, in the NFL. This game keeps getting more and more pathetic every year.

In 10 years we will be watching flag football where every game is a tie and there will be a 15 yard penalty if you make any noise that could distract anyone on either team ....

None of these celebration rules speed up the game. In fact, they slow the game down. The play clock keeps running while a guy is celebrating, dancing, spiking the ball or whatever. The clock only stops when a penalty is called and then the ref has to re-set the clock. If a player or team wants to waste their time celebrating after a 1st down instead of huddling up and getting ready for the next play that is up to them. They may not be ready for the next play or even earn a delay of game penalty. Take another 5 seconds off the play clock and maybe you can nip celebrations because coaches really will be pushing for their teams to huddle up and get prepared for the next play.

Sounds like it would only preclude spiking the ball on the field of play, not in the endzone.

Lame. This wouldn't speed the game up by any discernible amount whatsoever. It may even slow it down. I'm not a fan of the excessive celebration that has plagued the league as of late, but this is ridiculous. The only real "delays" that bother me are the officiating delays that occur when trying to figure out all of these new rules. Let them play. Let them have fun...within reason.

I find it odd that so many of us want the game to be slowed down. Many of the posters on this board spend a fair percentage of each day devoting time to this board, the Dallas Cowboys, and the sport of football...and yet when the games get here, they want them to be over asap. I wouldn't mind spending an extra hour or two a week watching football, but I guess I may be too big a fan of the pomp and pageantry.

I have a great idea.

Let's figure out how to really punish these guys for doing drugs and steroids and for getting busted for whatever they get busted for, then we can concentrate on the real problems of our society like spiking the ball.

This is why the NFL is becoming a shadow of what it used to be.
