The passing of Hall of Famer Deacon Jones overnight got me thinking about the best pass rushers of all time. Jones is certainly one of them, but where does he rank?

On my list, he's second.

Here's how I rank the best pass rushers ever, taking into account that sacks weren't considered a real stat until 1982. That means men like Deacon Jones, Coy Bacon and Al "Bubba" Baker didn't get their sack totals rung up as real stats.

8. DeMarcus Ware, OLB, Dallas -- Think it's too high? He has seven double-digit sack seasons in his eight years in the league. He will be much higher on this list in a couple of years.

Way too high. Oh my gawd.

I like me some Demarcus Ware, but wow is he overrated at times.

Can't have him that high when he barely has any memorable sacks/strips.

Gastineau should be number 1. He was unblockable.

Really? I think this was a pretty good list. Ware looks funny on it, but it's because he's still in the meat of his career. As the notation says, when he's all done, he'll be higher than he is here. I'd say he could end up a top-5 player if his play doesn't drop off a cliff.

Which of those guys mentioned below him, in his prime, would you take over Ware in his prime? Strahan, maybe? Youngblood? I actually like him more than Derrick Thomas and Richard Dent, above him on the list.

If Ware was retired and had done what he's done so far in his carer no one would question whether or not he belongs on that list

Ware gets stats, but he is not a dominant pass rusher. Teams don't fear him. King Dunlap owned him last season (and he owned no one else because he sucks).

Ware is a very nice player. To me, he's Greg Ellis.

i dont know how many posters would appreciate it, but thats good company, a lot of good names not on that list, but i dont know what his criteria was, was it all years, or what, but thats good company for Ware to be in.

Kind of like Emmitt was overrated right? He wasn't flashy enough, fast enough? But he holds the records.

Maybe Demarcus should come up with some dance. Or maybe spit on the QB he just sacked. That would be memorable right?

Let's just say that I think your take on Ware is 'barking mad' and agree to disagree. :). You can bet teams build their offensive game plans around Demarcus Ware (Anthony Spencer, too, but that's another matter). If there's a definition of 'fearing him' that goes beyond that, the difference isn't really all that important.

I think Ware's al all-time great pass rusher, and, when his career is done--if it's not cut short by a late injury--that'll be a near consensus.

I do think that Harvey Martin should be on the list. He is very close to the top of that list with regards to sacks and he still holds the unofficial Cowboys mark.

Ware is stung with the same problem as Witten -- neither of them has really had an opportunity for signature moments in the playoffs -- especially NFC championship games and Superbowls.

It's BEYOND REASON that two Hall-of-Fame bound players as good as these two have never sniffed even a NFL championship game.

another name left off. tons of good players who should be on that list, thats why sometimes these lists are not needed, you cant fit all the guys that can make cases for being on these lists.

Of the current players, Jared Allen might merit consideration in the Just Missed section.

You could say that about Greg Ellis. He was an excellent player here that, unfortunately, played during the Quincy/Leaf/Chutch/Henson/Banks/Wright/Testeverde/Bledsoe years.

Ellis was a very good player.
