POWER RANKINGS
CurrentTeamPrevious
Pittsburgh Steelers1Does this team have any holes? And please don't say anything about the loss of Jerome Bettis. He won't be missed. What's even more amazing is Ben Roethlisberger is still getting better. They are the team to beat.
Indianapolis Colts2Will they miss James? Not with Joseph Addai on board. This kid is explosive, something James was not. The offensive line remains a concern.
New England Patriots3Oh no. The Patriots have lost a ton of players and haven't added that many. That was the cry in March. In April, they had a great draft. Don't worry about this team. They'll be there again.
Carolina Panthers4They did well in free agency and then followed that up with a heck of a draft class. This is the team to beat in the NFC. The Panthers are loaded.
Jacksonville Jaguars6Losing Jimmy Smith to retirement hurts, but there is a lot of young talent at receiver that just needs to step up. The addition of tight end Marcedes Lewis will really help the passing game.
Miami Dolphins5Getting Jason Allen in the draft will help the secondary, but they lost Ricky Williams for the year and there is still some uncertainty about Daunte Culpepper. If he misses a month, they certainly won't be this high.
Denver Broncos7Adding Javon Walker -- if he's back to his pre-ACL injury form -- is something this team needed to help stretch the field. But what does the drafting of Jay Cutler say about Jake Plummer?
Seattle Seahawks8They've made some nice additions on defense and the draft brought a solid cover corner in Kelly Jennings to replace Andre Dyson. But losing Steve Hutchinson is not something they can get over easily.
New York Giants9Getting LaVar Arrington will help the defense, and taking Sinorice Moss in the second round will help the offense. The offensive line and the secondary have to play better for this team to improve.
Dallas Cowboys10Getting Bobby Carpenter in the first round of the draft gives the Cowboys two good edge rushers in their 3-4. The offensive line is still a concern, though.
Philadelphia Eagles11They had a heck of a draft, which will help right away on both lines. There still is a question mark about the receivers. Who is the go-to guy? Donovan McNabb appears focused.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers12Improving the offensive line was priority No. 1 for this team and they've added some players to make it more competitive, including first-round pick Davin Joseph. That will pay dividends.
Arizona Cardinals21There is some talk that Green will leave after this season. That makes this a huge year for him and this team. There might be a playoff game in that new stadium next January.
Washington Commanders14The draft didn't help much, so they better hope their free-agent signings do the trick. They’ve also added a good offensive coordinator in Al Saunders, which will help.
Kansas City Chiefs16They haven't done a lot in the offseason, aside from getting a new coach in Herm Edwards. Drafting Tamba Hali when they did should help the pass rush.
San Diego Chargers17Don't worry about Philip Rivers. He'll be fine. But this first year with him starting could be a step back for the Chargers before they take off next season.
Minnesota Vikings18They've made some nice moves since the end of last year, including drafting Iowa linebacker Chad Greenway in the first round. But can Brad Johnson be the answer at quarterback at his age? Will they regret letting Daunte Culpepper go?
Cincinnati Bengals15Why so low? It's the Carson Palmer factor. He suffered his knee injury just five month ago. When will he be ready? If he can't play for a month or so, this team is in big trouble.
St. Louis Rams19The offense should be explosive again, and they've added some good players on defense. Getting Ty Hill in the draft was a must to improve their coverage.
Chicago Bears13They were very good on defense last year and so-so on offense, yet they went strong on defense in the draft. What the heck was that all about?
Baltimore Ravens20If they get Steve McNair, they will move up some. But until it's official, we'll wait.
Atlanta Falcons22The defense should be better based on some free-agent signings and the draft, but that's not the issue. The issue is the passing game. Can Mike Vick improve in that area?
Green Bay Packers24Brett Favre decided to play again, which is a good thing. But they still have a lot of questions, starting with running back.
Houston Texans30They should have taken Reggie Bush, but they had a good draft anyway. If the line can protect David Carr, they'll be much improved.
Tennessee Titans23Is Billy Volek really a starting-caliber quarterback? Vince Young is a ways away, so he better be. Signing several high-priced free agents and then letting McNair walk is a strange mix.
New Orleans Saints25Reggie Bush will be a star, but when will Drew Brees be ready to play? That's the key issue facing this team in the next three months.
Oakland Raiders26They've added Aaron Brooks to play quarterback, which could turn out to be a good thing. The draft added much-needed help on defense.
Cleveland Browns27Is Charlie Frye ready to take the next step? That's the key question. The Browns must think so because they traded Trent Dilfer. They have added some good players in the offseason.
Buffalo Bills28If J.P. Losman makes strides, they'll move up this board. If not, they'll stay here. The offense still has a lot of holes which is why they're down so low.
Detroit Lions29If they think Jon Kitna and Josh McCown are the long-term answers at quarterback, they better think again. They're serviceable for now, but is that good enough?
New York Jets31New coach Eric Mangini has his hands full here. They had a good draft, but who plays quarterback? It's a two-year rebuild for this team.
San Francisco 49ers32They're moving in the right direction, but there's a long way to go. Give this team at least another year of growing, then in 2007 they should be competitive.
