A league source tells Pro Football Talk that agent Tom Condon has requested on behalf of Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo a contract including guaranteed money in excess of $30 million. Such a deal would give Romo more guaranteed money than Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, who pocketed 30 million when signed a long-term deal several years ago. Manning was also represented by Condon. As we hear it, the Cowboys aren't biting. Though they've concluded that Romo is for real and deserves to be paid accordingly, owner Jerry Jones isn't prepared to fork over that kind of money yet. -- Pro Football Talk

Wonder if this is true? If so, wonder if Jerry will agree to it?

This is a repost but moreso its inaccurate because Manning got 35 mil with his deal. PFT is POS.

If Romo wins a Super Bowl this year, peyton manning money circa 2007 may be worth chump change 4 years from now. Remember Aikman's contracts?

Didn't the Raiders have to pay their first round QB pick around $30M guaranteed money and he's totally unproven player who didn't even sign in time to attend TC. I can see where Condon coming from. Isn't Romo worth just as much as Russell? It all goes back to the ridiculous draft where teams pay outrageous monies to high draft picks who may/may not ever work out.

1. Has PFT EVER been right about anything having to do with the Cowboys?

2. Having said that, $30 million guaranteed is probably right and was also reported by ESPN. If Jerry keeps waiting on this BS, it's only going to go up.

the way the cap is going up - todays OH MY GOD is a bargain in what, 2-3 years?

my biggest fear is greed killing the game. sooner or later they're going to tap out of the average americans pocketbook and they just can't pay anymore. what then? what do the owners do when players are used to more and more and more as a matter of fact? where else can it come from to sustain the growth rate we're seeing in the salaries?

pay per view is coming. that's only gonna stall it at this rate.

Actually the system works great and is the best in all of sports, not like that joke of a cap in the NBA. The salary cap is set as a percentage of NFL gross revenue. The more the NFL makes, the higher the salary cap goes. The opposite can happen. If the NFL has a down year and losses money, the salary cap will go down.

Pay per view is already here, it is called Sunday Ticket.

The NFL makes its money from Network TV Contracts, that will not change. NBC, CBS, FOX, and ESPN pass the cost along to advertisers who look at the ratings to determine if that 30 sec commerical is worth the $$$.

As long as the ratings stay high, the advertisers will keep paying the networks, who in turn will pay even more for NFL contracts, which in turn raises NFL revenue, which then raises the salary cap.

ROMO WILL GET $30 MILL BECAUSE OF ALL THOSE ED COMMERCIALS:laugh2:

I think he'll get it. His value is at it's highest, he's the new face of a very high profile team and he's got Jerry backed in a corner with no alternative should he bolt.

I think the asking price is high but at 27 this is his one chance to cash in while in his prime, if I were him I would do the same.

Leonard Davis got almost $20 million in guaranteed money, if Romo doesnt get $30 I will be shocked. Comparing his contract to Manning's contract is silly, Manning signed his years ago. With the increase in salary CAP dollars and player salaries it isnt a stretch at all. Heck Nate Clements got 8 years and $80 million last year.

If the salary cap ever goes down, that would be like Armageddon in the NFL. The way contracts are designed to escalate salary as the contract goes on... there would be a LOT of players cut.

didn't Jamarcus Russell just get a 30 mil guaranteed?...

if a rookie - who has no NFL experience can garner 30mil in G money then Romo should get his $30M with a handshake and a smile.

at the end of the day, we all know Jerry will pay the piper to keep Romo in big D.

I agree that PFT is for the most part non-sense. I do believe that in the end Romo will get what he deserves. If I were Jerry, I would pay the $30 million gladly. If Dallas gets to or wins the Bowl this year, and I think they have a good chance, it may cost Jerry a lot more to sign Romo. I say sign Tony now and get that issue behind us.

back up and see more than *today* but look where it's going.

the system works "great" *today*. i'm talking 10 years down the road when whatever romo gets today is dwarfed by some rookie a crappy team had to have coming out of the draft.

30mil guaranteed. wow. would we have imagined that 5 years ago? what would a 3rd year aikman get *today*?

no way should he get payton money? why not? even if he did it's a lesser % capwise than what indy did. the value of the position has gone up since then. why? and where does the money come from?

ultimately, us. how much do you spend on football a year now and how much are you willing to before it's just too much of your disposable income to afford so you stop or cut back? no 1 person won't make a difference either way but i'm talking trending.

$2500 for nosebleed seats to the superbowl. you going? if so, how much before you won't go? if not, is price a major factor in your decision?

pay per view isn't here in the way i'm talking. i'm talking even local channels will give out to the dish network or cable tv and buy the rights maybe. the nfl network may keep it all for itself and charge you per game but allow you to watch any game you want. want to watch dallas? sure. $20. $39.95? that will come later as the baby steps guide the way.

we laughed when russell asked for 30+mil guaranteed yet romo will likely get it. then in 5 years when the next "romo" comes along, $45mil guaranteed won't be a thing at all.

where is that extra $15mil going to come from? you? me? yep. we'll have to buy more shirts, tickets, that $6 beer is now a $10 spot and suddenly it's $200 for nosebleed seats at the new stadium. um...seat. maybe they'll have to put up a way to make you pay to go to the restroom now also.

if not the next $15mil that pushes it too far, what about when we reach the $100mil guaranteed.

where will that $70mil come from?

$60 pay per views. or maybe you can go to your local sports bar and pay $10 to get in and have more reasonable beer and food. (that i may actually do tomorrow) only the bar will have to pay $1000 to get it for replay in that capacity.

it's only a matter of time before football outgrows itself and look at the last % hike in the cap and look at the next few. great, so we can pay more $ now. but in the end the $ value of football does have a cap before the "salary raises" simply can't be met by demand.

the players won't think it fair because the league didn't plan / manage better.
the league won't think it fair the players are asking for more than the league is making.

look what happened to hockey a few years ago. why is football immune from this?

it's not and what i'm telling you will come about. it's a "progression" of things that if not managed it will happen. and since no one will listen to the manager spreading doom/gloom if one is around to say we'll be fine, it won't be fine and who knows. maybe the league itself will bankrupt.

or i could be wrong.

Man.....you sure do worry alot about things you have entirely no control over whatsoever. Why so paranoid I wonder?

Pay Romo whatever he wants and relax. There's more than enough money to go around long enough to enjoy these games while we're young enough to enjoy them.

Eat, drink and be merry, my mink-oil mulleted friend.

If Romo hit the open market he would get at least 40 in guaranteed money. There are so many teams looking for a franchise QB and would pay handsomely for one. And i think Romo has the potenial to be better than Manning. Also, i worry about Owens getting jealous over the money Romo will be getting.
