I didnt get to post alot during the draft but did sign in a few times to see what others were saying and get info on our picks, must say I am pleased with the weekend...if someone had told me Friday we were going to get Anthony Spencer in the 1st and in addition to our own #1 next yr be almost guaranteed of a top-10 (if not top-5) draft pick on top of it, I'd have said someone was high as a kite...
Spencer was one of the guys I was hoping we'd land...I had said I would prefer we get him via trade down rather than at 22, and as turned out thats what happened...we get him via trade down...guy can rush the passer and also be producitve vs the run...he makes plays, now we have two potentially dominant OLB's, although I think initially Spencer will be a pass rush specialist with Carpenter starting OLB opp Ware...on nickel downs I think Carp moves inside for James (assuming James wins the starting ILB job) and Spencer comes in to do his thing
after that I guess is where the crying and whining started for some fans and I really dont get it...if we had done NOTHING else other than land Spencer and an extra #1 next yr I'd think people should be happy, we landed a potential franchise pick...probably 50-75% of the people in this forum complained we never do anything about the OL issues, so what happens? we go get two of the higher rated, more flexible OL's in the draft and people still complain...I really like Marten and Free and eventually they could be this team's bookends for years to come..they can both play multiple OL positions in addition to playing LT...everyone was crying for an everydown FB...we draft a potential everydown FB and people complain-- and it was with a SIXTH rd pick...I must admit I know nothing about the last pick at CB, but the kid from Cal Poly looks like a real potential diamond in the rough and has a ton of physical ability..thats leaves the Stanback pick...if he had been drafted to play QB I'd be disappointed, but he wasnt...he's a tremendous athlete, big, with reportedly soft hands and exceptional open field running skills...he has previous WR experience and will also be tried returning kicks...considering we needed somebody like that and looking at what else was available, he was probably as good a choice as any and seems to have MORE upside...
this weekend was a success people...be happy we got the 2nd dominant pass rusher we needed and be THRILLED that we probably landed a top 5-8 pick for 2008 in the process...I know I am...good job by Jones, Ireland and the rest of the staff...I cant wait for training camp....Phillips is going to do wonders with this defense and assuming Romo doesnt regress, our offense looks like it will be plenty capable
