Promising anecdote for Jeremy Parnell career path

I was thinking if we could have traded for Gabe Carimi like the Bucs when I came across this story on their promising right tackle.

TAMPA - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers showed Demar Dotson the money this spring. Then they showed him the confidence.

Instead of pursuing a veteran right tackle in free agency or using a premium draft choice on a challenger for Dotson’s starting job, Tampa Bay signed Dotson to a new four-year deal in March and continued to talk up its hulking lineman as an emerging standout.

“The sky’s the limit and I’m going to keep working until I perfect this game,’’ Dotson said. “I want to be known as the best right tackle in the game – and I know I can do it.’’

Dotson, 27, drew encouragement from Tampa Bay’s decision to pass on experienced right tackles such as Tyson Clabo, Eric Winston and Sean Lockler in free agency.

Dotson enters training camp next month as an unquestioned starter on a unit that helped the Bucs finish ninth in the league in total offense last season, despite major injuries to Pro Bowl guards Davin Joseph (knee) and Carl Nicks (toe).

“If he can stay on that trajectory, he can be a really good football player,’’ Bucs coach Greg Schiano said of Dotson, a former basketball player at Southern Miss who played only six college football games before signing with Tampa Bay in 2009 as an undrafted free agent.

Once Dotson replaced six-year starter Jeremy Trueblood in Week 2 last season, he improved each game on the edge of an offensive line that yielded only 26 sacks and opened consistent holes for running back Doug Martin, who rushed for 1,454 yards as a rookie.

Doug Free will provide the same competition/insurance policy that Carimi could have but I could definitely see Parnell making this kind of leap this year.

Imagine if the Cowboys traded their 2011 first round pick for a 6th round pick... This place would implode!

It would get ugly in a hurry.

Same career path, hopefully he'll have the same success. Basketball players seem to have positive transitions into football, for the most part.

The only way to show that they have confidence in Parnell would be cutting Free.

We had two 1st round picks that year. Neither got a 2nd contract.

I think you can have confidence in a player and still leave other options on the roster should it not pan out. The idea that you have to go all in on an unproven unheralded developmental player like Parnell and leave your roster void of a plan B seems foolish to me.

Agree.

Also, they have had enough confidence in Parnell to make him the only backup OT on the team the past 2 seasons.

We got five years out of him as a regular contributor. That's not really comparable to the Bears dumping Carimi after just two seasons (of which he sat out almost the entire first year). The equivalent would be if we'd given up on Tyron Smith already -- but we haven't. He's our starting LT.

The fact that we choose not to re-sign a guy doesn't mean he was a "miss." Felix and Jenkins were both starters for several years, which -- although less than ideal -- is a fairly typical return for a late first-rounder.

Yes, a draft pick's best value is during their 1st contract. Even if they're great, on their 2nd contract they cost as much as a Free Agent that that someone else drafted.

From a team perspective, I agree. But if we are talking about how the player sees it, signing any guy would suggest the opposite of confidence, imo.

I believe the contracts of Jones and Jenkins add up to the cost of a large Starbucks coffee. I wouldn't put them in the Mike Wallace 2nd contract category.

The guy (Parnell) had 270 snaps last season including nearly 2 full games at LT without a problem (giving up 1 sack).

He played the equivalent of a full game at RT and still did reasonably well.

He may not be a proven commodity but he's not far away either.

Felix was Garrett's pick--and only Garrett.

Wait...are you saying these situations are comparable? Or are you stretching the truth to fit an agenda?

I think the only thing "missing" here in this logic is the ability to identify a player early-on in the contract who is a great system fit and buy out the end of the rookie contract to save over the long haul. Similar to what Dallas did with Jay Ratliff, the Patriots with Hernandez, and so on.
