He also traded a couple of picks from the following season...

Ditka didn't care because he knew he wasn't going to be with the Saints for a long stay.

And no, in spite of the fact that I have always liked the idea of moving up in drafts, I wouldn't do so at THIS cost.

yea, cause it worked out so well for him.

people can see "very bad idea" staring them in the face and still wanna do it despite actual physical evidence telling you to run from such stupidity.

It would take more than this years draft for CJ. I would do it for this years whole draft, just not any high picks in 2008. This guy is Randy Moss 2.0 with no mental problems.

Any other time I would make fun of someone who said they would do this ..... but I think Calvin Johnson is gonna be a special special player ...... I would trade every player we drafted last year for him ..... so why would I not trade this years draft for him.

Its stupid ..... but I think he is gonna be "hall of fame" good.

I don't think its stupid when its a player with no holes. If you think the guy is a hall of fame type barring injury, you should do your best to get him. If this were Jerry Rice and you had the hindsight to know what player he would become it would be a no brainer.

In this era of free agency, I wouldn't trade all of this year's choices and part of next's for any wide receiver, not even Jerry Rice.

I might do it for an Earl Campbell, though.

What the heck does free agency have to do with it? You would re-sign a guy like that and a high pick signs a six or seven year deal anyway. On that Top Draft Day Trades show, the 49ers traded I believe a second round pick to get ahead of Dallas to get Jerry Rice, Walsh mentioned Rice was the only player that panned out in that draft for the 49ers but it was still a great draft because they got him.

I'd be very tempted, considering what we've drafted, I'd replace those folks for him.
But this is only if I truly believe he can be an unstoppable star. I personally don't know that, I've not done enough research to know this, so at this time, I probably wouldn't do it.

We have moved up to the number one spot before and it payed off for us. I would give this and next years first to move up, then use some of our later rounds picks to try and move up into the first of next years draft.

Let me put it this way...

A) Calvin Johnson

or...

B) Pick #22 plus 9 more draft picks, any of which could be a WR from the following group.

Robert Meachem
Dwayne Bowe
Dwayne Jarrett
Ted Ginn Jr.
Anthony Gonzalez
Steve Smith
Jason Hill
Aundrae Allison
Sidney Rice

Which option would you take?

It partially depends on his salary slotting.

I don't want #1 overall draft choice money (salary cap) tied up with a rookie WR. I could see allocating the money for a truly outstanding QB prospect (Aikman / Peyton Manning) or to an outrageously talented RB prospect. But I'd be hard pressed to tie up that kind of money on a WR.
