Zabransky sees bright future with Texans
By Chadd Cripe - Idaho Statesman
Edition Date: 05/01/07

Former Boise State quarterback Jared Zabransky was frustrated but motivated Sunday as he waited and waited and waited for a call that never came.
The quarterback who posted a 33-5 record as the Broncos' starting quarterback and engineered two undefeated regular seasons was snubbed by all 32 teams in the NFL Draft.

He agreed to a free-agent contract with the Houston Texans on Sunday night, he said.

"That fires me up," Zabransky said Monday. "I'm going to work my tail off. I'm going to be a starter in this league before a lot of people realize it."

BSU coach Chris Petersen said he was surprised that Zabransky wasn't drafted, but he figures the snub will motivate his former quarterback to get even better.

"I thought somebody would take a shot on him late," Petersen said. "… He'll have a major chip on his shoulder about that. It will make him a better quarterback and a better player, and it will probably increase his odds of making the team."

Zabransky is one of 12 Broncos who have joined NFL teams since the beginning of the draft Saturday, according to the players and Petersen. Four were drafted — safety Gerald Alexander (Lions), wide receiver Legedu Naanee (Chargers), linebacker Korey Hall (Packers) and tight end Derek Schouman (Bills) — and eight have reached free-agent agreements — Zabransky, punter Kyle Stringer (Seahawks), defensive tackle Andrew Browning (Lions), fullback Brad Lau (Rams), wide receiver Jerard Rabb (Cowboys), wide receiver Drisan James (Bears), defensive back/kick returner Quinton Jones (Chargers) and long snapper Mike Dominguez (Jets).

That group helped BSU go 13-0 last year, beat Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl and finish No. 5 in the nation.

"Hopefully one thing they've learned about being here is, ‘Hey, all we need is an opportunity to prove ourselves,' " Petersen said. "Now these guys have that. It's up to them to make the most of it."

Zabransky joins an organization in transition at the quarterback position. The Texans traded for Matt Schaub, the former Atlanta Falcons backup, to fill the starting spot.

Behind Schaub is the non-descript trio of Sage Rosenfels, Bradlee Van Pelt and Quinton Porter. Porter plays in NFL Europa. The Texans depth chart is one reason Zabransky chose them over the New York Giants, Tampa Bay, Carolina, Dallas, New Orleans and Detroit. He talked to all of those teams after the draft, he said.

Zabransky visited the Texans in mid-April.

"It was the best situation for me," he said. "… I felt this was a good opportunity for me to come in and get a No. 3 spot right away and make a team and go from there."

Zabransky was in New York for draft weekend to promote the EA Sports NCAA Football video game. He is on the game's cover.

He was taking a city tour Sunday and tracking the draft through text messages from his agent. He expected to go in the fourth round or early in the fifth.

"It wasn't good, man," he said. "… My name kept sliding."

Zabranksy was particularly disappointed when he heard about some of the 11 quarterbacks who were drafted. Nevada quarterback Jeff Rowe went in the fifth round.

Zabransky and Boise State beat Rowe and Nevada by a combined score of 145-42 the last three years.

"I thought I was better than three-fourths of the guys picked throughout the draft," Zabransky said. "I didn't know what exactly I needed to do differently. That's the nature of the beast, I guess. A lot of guys have been wronged in the past as far as the draft goes and they went out and proved themselves. I'm going to make it my goal to be one of those guys."

Houston quarterbacks coach Kyle Shanahan called Zabransky after the Texans made their final selection in the seventh round, Zabransky said.

"He said, ‘Hey, man, I was pushing to get you picked up there,' " Zabransky said. "He apologized for it."

Zabransky will begin his Texans career at a mini-camp in mid-May. He will be in Boise until then.

"I can't wait to get back to Boise and start training again," he said.

Zabransky says he will fall back on past experiences as he enters the NFL. He was mostly overlooked out of Hermiston (Ore.) High and he was in danger of losing his starting job after a subpar junior season.

"This is typical of my situation," he said. "No one saw me out of high school. Boise State saw me and decided to give me a chance. I had to go down there and prove I could play. Honestly, when I came in, not many of the coaches thought I'd be the guy. … I continued to have to prove myself after the junior season and we go out with a bang my senior year and I do everything I'm supposed to do — everything I want to do — at the (scouting) combine, prove I'm the most athletic quarterback in the draft, and that doesn't hold water.

"I'm going to go out and compete."

The Broncos still have not had a quarterback drafted since Jim McMillan in 1975. The past three starters — Bart Hendricks, Ryan Dinwiddie and Zabransky — have combined to win seven conference titles and five bowl games, but none is taller than 6-foot-2.

Zabransky is 6-2, 219.

"They want the guys to fit the mold," Petersen said. "The mold for the quarterback position is 6-4, 6-5."

It's nice to see a player use his brain when signing as an UDFA.

So many times players are disappointed they aren't drafted and don't seem to be thinking clearly. They'll sign with a club that's closest to home, their favorite from their youth or even worse, the first one to call.

They really need to take a look at the depth chart. Zabransky has a much better shot at making the Texans as the 3rd QB than he does of making the Cowboys.

Gotta agree with that. This just makes me like him even more. I'm glad we showed interest.

Completely agree.

Especially considering that Romo could have gone elsewhere for more $$, but saw that we had Quincy Carter and Chad Hutchinson, and decided to sign in Dallas.

Romo's starting in Dallas more because he made the right choice than his ability. Yes, there was the Payton/college connection but I think he looked at the QB depth chart and saw it was in shambles and he'd have a chance to make the team.

Do you really think he'd be were he is today if he'd have gone to a team that already was set at the position and he didn't make it out of his first training camp?

In that same vein, I think it's insane that a WR would sign an UDFA deal with Dallas this year. They have 3 that are guaranteed to make the roster, two in Hurd and Austin that everyone seems high on, so he'd be battling an experienced player in Rector, an early 4th rounder in Stanback and a CFL player in Richardson for the last spot. I wouldn't like the odds. There's a lot better options out there unless someone's happy being a camp body so they can go home telling people they played in the first preseason game with the Dallas Cowboys. Not that that's not a serious source of pride and something to brag about but the goal should be to score a roster spot.

My guess is Dallas would have pulled the offer to Zabransky when Matt Moore decided to sign with us.

Agree about the WR position, but I don't think any QB has #3 job locked up at all. The only QB positions locked up are Romo and Johnson. Wonder which QB makes the grade; it also possible we won't keep #3 QB on the team but on the PS like last year to save a spot we can use elsewhere on the team.

Also will be interesting to see if we keep 6 WRs cause that will cut down who we can keep elsewhere, particularly if we keep Folk for kicking game but retain Gramatica for FG & we still have McBriar.

Matt Baker thought he was going to the easier team to make last year when he signed with the Texans.

I thought it was funny that Zabransky was peeved for not going 4th-5th, while his coach was expecting him to be a late round pick and mentioned that maybe not getting drafted will increase his chances to make the team by giving him extra motivation. He doesn't seem to sold on his ex-qbs chances. Sounds like the kid was listening to some people who were overhyping his value to the nfl.

The Texans snared this undrafted QB.

You talk about Moxie, this fire-breathing QB played a memorable game in the Feista Bowl.

Maybe he was underweight. I just don't know how this type of player was not drafted.

Hail, even a seventh-round pick would have been worth it to get him.

I was hoping for Zabransky as well. I think he would be a good project player who could develop into a good QB. Biggest question for me about Zabransky is how much of his success was due to the unorthodox offense and play calling at Boise State? While it made for an entertaining game you’re not going to see the NFL teams run as many gimmick plays as Boise State does.

Where do you guys think that Boise State running back will go in the draft next year, you know the one that scored the touchdown on the statue of liberty two point conversion?

By several scouting reports I have seen, left tackle Ryan Clady is expected to be a 1st rounder next year. He has also been selected to Playboy's pre-season all-american team.
If their RB Ian Johnson has a good season and comes out next year he will be a 1st day pick. The kid has unreal vision, patience and footwork.
People that don't follow Johnson think he runs up big numbers because of playing in the WAC but he has had some of his best days against Oregon State and got just over 100 yards in the Fiesta Bowl. He seems to play up to the level of competition.
I figured he's a pretty tough guy after playing a game and getting 100+ with a collapsed lung last season.

BSU "discovered" Zabransky when he visited BSU for a baseball camp while he was still in high school. He was on no one's, including BSU's, radar as a football player.
If they hadn't pulled off the comeback in the Fiesta bowl it would of been the 3rd year Zabransky ended his season with a game losing int.
He makes some bad decisions with the ball at times. But I can see why he would be ticked about Rowe being drafted and him not. Zabransky almost always found ways to win games and Rowe seemed like JAG to me.
Thing about Zabransky is he has always had to overcome things and rise to the occasion. If anything allows him to succeed in the NFL it will be that trait.

Wow...Super cool info man, appreciate that. I am on the fence about Zabransky but I think that Ian Johnson is going to be a serious catch for anybody who drafts him next year. That part about the collapsed lung says it all...that is incredible.

Here's a great Zabransky story.
When he was a junior in high school his dad contracted West Nile virus and went into a coma. Zabransky ran the family's potato farm in Oregon on his own for a few months while his dad recovered.
If you are around farming you know that's not an impossible task, but it ain't exactly easy, either. Especially for a high school kid.
I think Zabransky's best hope is to be a career backup but he has surprised me before so I wouldn't completely write him off.

Well that just goes to show you that the Cowboys brass are not the only ones that can make mistakes. I feel relatively sure he will not do better in Houston than he could have in Dallas. I can't Imagine the Texans having a better next 10 years than the Boys!

I saw that game too. I was thinking how bad I thought he was after throwing all those picks...but then again, we expect nothing less than perfect when it comes to bieng a qb; It is just so damn difficult. I don't know how the college guys even manage it, with all the homework and pressure to win. I think he reacts more than he acts when he is playing; I think the pressure gets to him like the rest of us humans. I don't know how you would feel but I would rather throw a pick into the hands of a cb than get destroyed by four 275 lineman.
