Curious if any Doctors out there ( @jobberone ), or maybe someone who is currently taking a medication that fits the bill, to weigh in on.

I am curious if there is a prescription muscle relaxer out there that may have a side effect of giving a person dry mouth.

Said prescription should not make the person loopy, drowsy is ok but nothing loopy our act crazy. Also said medication should not be one of those that is known to be extremely habit forming or addictive.

So basically what I want to know is..is there a muscle relaxer out there that actually helps relax the muscles, that could be used on a regular basis without making someone addicted or loopy, somewhat drowsy is ok but even if it does not make someone drowsy that would be even better...but DOES have the side effect of giving someone dry mouth?

Hope that makes sense.

Reason I ask is I have back issues...my back recently has really been bothering me a great deal.

However I also have sleep issues. Chances are I should be using a Cpap mask to sleep but I really really really do not want to start down that road as I move around too much in my sleep, I can't stand to sleep on my back as when I rarely do I always get a headache.

I have trouble breathing through my nose at night causing sleep apnea issues. I sleep on my side and or stomach most times. Due to the breathing through my nose issues that were leading to sleep apnea...my body started compensating so I started sleeping with my mouth open.

This would be ok however the problem is it creates the problem of drooling at night. So waking up multiple times in the night to wipe drool off my cheek/beard and moving the pillow around means not getting a good nights sleep.

However there for some time I was taking a pill that caused my mouth to be dry when I took it at night. This would stop the drooling at night and I would get a better nights sleep.

So I was wondering if there was a recommended muscle relaxer out there that kill two birds with one stone...help relax the muscles in my back that have been giving me trouble while at the same time giving me dry mouth to stop the drooling and in doing so help me sleep better at night without waking up multiple times.

Again...I do not want to start having to try to using a Cpap mask...i honestly don't think I could get used to one.

Sounds like you're looking for something to treat symptoms of an underlying issue. Are you overweight? That could be causing your sleep issues.

Been overweight my whole life.

It used to be that it would take me about between one to two hours, after laying down, before I could get to sleep. My mind would be racing thinking of one thing or another. Used to envy people who could just lay down and go to sleep.

A few years ago my allergies were getting so bad and so often than I started taking Zyrtec on a daily basis. Bad thing was when I started it I was taking it in the morning. However it made me too drowsy during the day so I started taking it about an hour before bedtime and it actually helps me get to sleep pretty quickly.

The weight issue can cause sleep apnea but it is not going to clear my nose up to breath through. Also it should be noted that I have a deviated septum from a childhood injury and I also have asthma.

IF I could sleep on my back, I would probably remedy all of this issues. However as stated before anytime I sleep any short length of time on my back I get a headache. It is one thing to retrain you body to sleep a specific way..I had to do that in the past due to some ear issues so I sleep differently laying on my left side vs right side.

But again since I don't get sleep on my back, since my nose is not always clear when I go to sleep even after taken an alergy pill at night and an alergy nasal spray in the morning...it means I sleep with my mouth open with leads to drooling.

Since the CPap mask is out of the question and sleeping on my back is out of the question...I would like to kill to birds with one stone and take something that also causes dry mouth....if that also helps with a bad back...that is a bonus.

Even if I do lose weight...I will still be sleeping on my side/stomach...will still have nasal issues and probably still be sleeping with my mouth open.

I was in the same boat as you minus the apnea and craving dry mouth. I was having back pain from sitting in a desk chair all day working (and staring at CowboysZone). I went to a Dr who found nothing wrong and recommended a Physical Therapist. The Physical Therapist found nothing wrong other than weak and flabby core muscles and gave me some recommended stretches and exercises which helped some. What really helped the most though was joining a gym and doing cross training. It's strengthened my core etc, wth the nice side effect of losing weight and overall feeling better and liking how I look. I use a lot less Advil and Alleve now as well. You can do the same exercises at home with little to no equipment and get a lot of the same results.

I can skinny as a rail, or maxed out muscle wise and that might help with the back problems.

However It is not going to clear out my nasal passages, fix my deviated septum, clear out my allergies, keep me from getting headaches if I sleep on my back, keep my mouth from opening because I am not getting good air flow through my nose, stop me from drolling and therefore help me sleep.

I'm taking a terrific medication called cannabis. Works great for everything you mentioned.

Depends. There are two forms, Indica and Sativa. While many over-state the effects of each and some understate. The former can help you sleep (lowers brain activity), the latter can act more like a cup of coffee which for some people prevent sleep or at least proper rest from occurring while asleep.

I take SOMA. Best muscle relaxer I've been Rx'd.

No dry mouth, BP.

Well it might help the back but I am looking for something that WILL cause dry mouth.

Heck might be able to find a simple sleeping pill that causes it.

Drink a bunch of whiskey, that will give you the dry mouth. Then pop a soma :)

Flexerol is also an amazing muscle relaxer, and also Rx'd by the VA. You'd have to ask your doc about the dry mouth part, I haven't taken it since I was in the Army at Walter Reed

Also, BP, go to your VA.

They will welcome you with open arms, Soldier.

Called earlier today to get an appointment...Nearest apt would be mid September.
Although they said I could pull a walk in and take my chances. However I would hate to drive there and sit all day and still not be seen.

Some of my back bothering me was having an odball chest cold where I have been coughing a good deal but it is a dry cough. Coughing enough to make the ribs and then the back sore. Uggg I think once you have had a back injury it seems like anything will aggravate your back.

Late September? That's awful! I just rescheduled my neurologist appointment from this past Monday to next Tuesday. Have Psych, GP, and Neurology all on the same day this way.

Sorry, not trying to hijack your thread. I've never had those types of waits, unless it's dental. Dental is about 1-2 months out.

I don't know BP, but for muscle relaxers, SOMA and Flexerol are the best I've had. Non-opiate. I was also Rx'd dilaudid for about 3 years (liquid), and it did more than relax my muscles LOL. That stuff's the devil. Stay away from your pure opiates. Especially ones that require a needle to admininster.

Like you mentioned in your OP, Doc(Jobber) or Doc50 would be your best bet, probably.

Yeah...Kind of shocked at the wait time. They have been pretty good about getting people in.

Right now I am taking simple tramadol and only about one a day at work. It does not really help much. Takes a little of the edge off but at the same time I don't have to worry about it making me feel sleepy or loopy either at work or when I am driving home.

Mostly I am just getting up, moving around and stretching my back as much as I can during the day.

I think if I would get rid of this cough my back will feel much better.

I will live...it's nothing life threatening or anything...just aggravating, annoying and sore and when get that way plus not getting a good sleep it just makes for a grumpy old tired turd lol.

Have you tried melatonin? It gives me dry mouth and helps me sleep like a baby.

Isn't Tramadol mostly for nerves? I don't think it will help much for muscles. SOMA is a good one but it will not cause dry mouth, I think you will need a second Rx for that one.

It is a shame that you can not get into the VA in a timely manner :(

Go find a regular doc and cough up a couple hundred if need be, much better than waiting for weeks.....

Saw this on a different forum (not FB, I really don't ever logon to that social disease)

It applies to most people asking the Internet for advise hah.
