I've heard that if you visit Japan you might encounter what's known as a “Gaijin hunter,” someone who is interested in you because you're a native English speaker. It appears to have a negative connotation, but is it really that bad? If a Japanese person wants to hang out with me, I don't know that I would mind helping them with their English. I already help some Japanese people with their English at this web site named Language 8. They write something in English and then a native speaker comes along and corrects it. I write in French and German there and native speakers correct me.

Japan seems like an interesting place to visit. I don't speak any Japanese, and I'd doubt many Japanese know French or German. If a Japanese person wanted to hang out with their initial interest being that I'm an English speaker, I don't know that that would bother me. Maybe they would be an interesting person to get to know while I'm there. I've heard that most Japanese are pretty nice people.

In China lots of people esp young girls want to talk with me and get their picture. Somehow I don't seem to mind. :) I used to read and write French but seems I forget it all.
