Question About the Capless Season

Since there are major rules about signing FA's in the capless season, are there also rules to prevent restructuring current players deals? What I mean is could we restructure some of the players to provide them a huge roster bonus during the uncapped year to reduced their salalry caphit going forward? Seems that might be a way for Jerry to take advantage of the capless year to keep our own guys, but also make it easier to sign FA's once the cap comes back. The players would benefit from getting a lump sum that might be especially attractive with the chance of a lock out after next season.

Is this possible?

It's a good question and one I've considered.

You know the scumbag 49ers did just that in Dec 1993. Before the first salary cap year of 1994.

1993 was the first year of FA but it was also uncapped. The 49ers circumvented the new cap by restructuring existing players just as you suggested to give themselves MUCH more room in 1994 and going foward.

Jerry and a few other owners had a problem with it, but you have to know no major deal was made of it by the anti-Cowboys, pro-49ers media.

The 49ers basically cheated their way to SB29. Had the Cowboys employed that strategy, if only to keep their SB roster intact, they would've been blasted!

To this day you'd still have ESPN referring to our tarnished SB29.

Considering this little tid bit of NFL history, I'd think some provisions may have been put in place to keep it from happening.

But maybe not since this is a very different situation without an impending cap for 2011 or beyond until a new deal is signed.

opted out of the existing CBA because a number of them feel they're spending too much money ( I think they just want the bigger market teams to share more their non-regular revenue stream ), and thus creating an automatic capless year, I don't think any of them are going to use that opportunity to go crazy.

Forget the part about the economic indicators pointing to less dispossable income for the general public and less advertizing revenues from corporations, which in itself is a road block for spending like drunken sailors, but if, for example, Jerry Jones goes crazy signing players to rediculous contracts ( something the rules don't permit him anyways, but just supposed that they did ) his fellow owners would lock the players out so fast they wouldn't have time to remove their underwear from their lockers.

They might just lock out the players in 2011 even IF players signed reasonable contracts.

Forget about 2010 being anything else BUT a salary dump year IF there's no " grandfathered " contract rules.

Jerry has already structured his contracts to take advantage of not having a cap this year. If by chance an agreement were made then he would have to restructure a bunch of contracts.

I don't believe all of that--the general public is still spending on frivalous crap--just less on houses and the like.
