Question on the Julius/Jackson Trade

I was talking to a buddy of mine who is a skins fan and during the conversation he randomly mentioned that he was happy that the cowboys passed up on Steven Jackson. My initial thought process was hopefully with Wade in town Spears can turn it on and hopefully Julius starts lighting it up. I then started to think about it even more and I seem to recall either parcells or jones mentioning that we nearly drafted Spears at 11 because he was who we really wanted and needed for the 3-4 but we decided to go ahead and take Ware because we thought it was more likely that Spears would fall to 20 than Ware, which turned out to be true. Is it a real possibility that had we not traded down we would NOT have Ware right now? or am I just trying to find a different angle to justify this trade? I know this trade has been beaten like a dead horse and the purpose of this thread is not to start it up again. Im just trying to see if my thinking is logical. Thanks.

Funny thing is, I seem to recall it being reported that we were in fact targeting Kevin Jones (and tried to no avail to move up to get him), the worst of the 3 thus far.

Kevin Jones is great. He's on a BAD team & has a bad injury now. He was stellar at Virginia Tech.

I was joking around.

I never thought of it that way I mean we were desperate for a rb that year and we could have got jackson but if we did no Ware. Well if I had to choose out of Ware and Jackson I would choose ware but tats just me.

It was said if Dallas had not traded and stayed, that the Cowboys had Kevin Jones ranked higher than Jackson and Dallas probably would've taken Kevin Jones and not Jackson had they not traded......the reason they did trade is they had several RBs graded closely and did not think Jackson or K. Jones were much better than JJ or Tatum Bell, so they traded down and took JJ.

We where targeting Andrews in that Draft but the Eagles moved up and drafted him before we can get our hands on him so we traded down.

it's true, San Diego was going to take whoever we didn't, so in all likelihood, if we passed on Ware at 11, he'd be a Charger right now, and Merriman would have been taken shortly thereafter, or viceversa

OK that is a good theory, makes me sleep better. I like the one where one crazy guy killed JFK.

This is true.

But it was also reported at the time that after we traded down, then furiously tried moving back up to the bottom of the first round to take K. Jones.

Its old news that BP and the scouts had looked at all the backs and really had not rated them all that much differently. But apparently BP thought to go with Kevin Jones first, and after that it was basically a pickem with Jackson, JJ, and Bell. Kevin went first after Jackson had been taken, then Bell, and JJ was there so we picked him. After we made the trade down, of course. The trade down part though- that was never really explained too well to me; we had the 20th pick or whatever at that time, and BP really did not see anyone he liked all that much so Jerrah agreed to trade down and get another first rd pick. We had roid man and Ware as being about equal- BUT rumors about him switching agents to the Postons had gotten around and both BP and Jerrah wanted NOTHING to do with them. Spears was one of BPs targets, but everything I have ever seen indicates that Ware and Roid man were always going to go higher. I never thought that Spears would be picked if Ware was there on the board- no way was he going to fall that much so that we could get him at 20.

Of course if Wilfork had dropped one more spot to us and the Pats had passed, I have no doubt we would've stayed and taken him, I remember Parcells loved Wilfork and he fell a lot further than predicted.
