Questions about Zeke's Appeal

I have questions about Zeke's appeal that I believe other Cowboys fans would be interested in if there is anyone that knows relevant info.

1) Can the appeal last into the 2017 season and end up not having him suspended for this year-- rather serve his suspension in the 2018 season? Essentially, will we know the result of the appeal before the season starts or is there a chance the appeals drag on for a long period of time?

2) Is it likely he serves a suspension for two or less games?

Thanks in advance.

1) If, after the NFL's appeals process for Elliott is complete, and Elliott's camp is unsatisfied with the result, they can seek a temporary injunction to basically put the suspension "on hold" while the issue is litigated in federal court. This would be similar to the route that Tom Brady took, where he played all 16 games the previous year, but eventually lost to the NFL in appellate court and served the 4-game suspension last September.

2) I think that it's most likely that the suspension is halved in an attempt for the NFL to show it's "tough" on domestic violence up front, but that it has a "fair" appeals process. I think anything less than 3 or 4 games after appeal is probably too optimistic.

Good thread, I was going to start a similar one.

Something that is puzzling to me is how everyone assumes the appeal will be settled by week one. Zeke's team will be pressing for more evidence to be reviewed and if you look at these appeals, historically, they can take a month or more for similar cases. The league will have two weeks to answer the appeal...that is not a guarantee.

Greg Hardy's appeal was almost two months, same with Brady. Sometimes they are much shorter but that is usually because it is a more cut and dry case...such as a failed drug test.

Let's say the NFL rules on the appeal the following week, whether they reduce the suspension or not. Is it even possible to request and receive a temporary injunction in less than just 2-3 business days before the game on Sunday?

I think Zeke will not be satisfied with the appeal decision and will take it to federal court. Thus I believe it will be in 2018 when he could possibly serve his suspension. But that is if the NFL wins a ruling in court.

My thoughts is that if he brings it to court he'll have a better chance of winning and overturning the decision. He has everything to lose by accepting the 6 game suspension. So I don't see why he wouldn't take this all the way to court.

IF it goes to court, I'm certain Zeke's lawyers drag it out until the offseason.

They can't. It's all in the hands of a judge. They need an injunction from a judge before week 1 or he will be sitting. Just filing a lawsuit does nothing if a judge doesn't grant an injunction.

I think it's the beard.

I mean, sure, he's got some nice physical characteristics. he's got a great smile. I hear he is intelligent.

But personally? Definitely has to be the beard....

Yes, you can get an emergency injunction in 1 day if you have a strong case and can show irreparable harm.

Wow, I sure read that wrong. I thought this was like sex appeal.

I mean Zeke's a nice looking kid, but Hell, this is football, I was about to say.

That's why I said IF...

One of the main reasons I ask is because the current odds of Zeke leading the league in rushing yards is +2500, rushing TDs is +2000.

If you were to place a $5,000 wager on Zeke leading in rushing yards you'd win $125,000; if you were to place a $5,000 wager on Zeke leading in rushing TDs you'd win $100,000.

$200 wins $5,000 for rushing yards and $200 wins $4,000 for rushing TDs for more sane wager amounts; but I've been seeking a large futures wager for a while now and this one is peaking my interest along with LeBron James to win the NBA MVP at +650 for 2017.

These odds were about +200 prior to his suspension news, meaning you would've been earning a mere $4,000 on a $2,000 bet.

I am starting to think it is highly likely that Zeke is either suspended for only 2 games or less, or that he takes it to federal court. It is worth nothing Emmitt led the league in yards in 1993 when he missed 3 games. (He had 1 game with 1 carry 1 yard / holdout). The worst case scenario is Zeke is suspended 4 games and he does not appeal, your bet would likely dead at that point.

If Zeke is let off the hook for the suspension, or appeals it and it leads to a 2018 suspension, the expected value on this bet is madness.

Thoughts?

Nobody knows. We can speculate endlessly but some players have tried and ended up with no reduction and no delay while others like Brady have been delayed a full year due to appeals.

They do tend to over punish and then reduce punishments after appeal but as indicated results have varied widely in the past.

The extreme inconsistencies are why players and fans are so angry.

Elliott, considering his propensities needs to be very careful. endorsements are great...but he needs a career first.

Elliott is not Brady either. He gets 6 as a message sent. After that??? Watch out regarding taking the owners on! Its dangerous...ask Kapearnick and many others.

It can be, yes. For high profile cases, attorneys can get the case in front of a judge fairly quickly.

The judges also have a bit of control over docketing the cases (along with the clerks of court), and when you're talking about a major issue like a union v. a corporation, they like to get them in and get them settled quickly.
