I have a few questions I think would interest most of the board.........

From what I understand, we can not sign FA's without losing them......true?

Players cut won't count. So cutting Roy or Marion wouldn't free up a FA acquistion......true?

Assuming that's the case, is their a means or method of buying them out of their contract? Paying them some lump sum to void the remaining years?
Effectively making them a FA. Giving them the freedom to negotiate and sign with another team without cutting them.

I see little use for these players. Or at least less use than OL upgrades and am fairly certain we have them signed beyond 2010.
Not sure how much they'd get offered in FA, but I know they'd both be signed for sure.

Another question

I believe when you trade a player you're still on the hook for the pro-rated bonus. Whatever is left gets excellerated into that year and the team you traded the player to is only on the hook for the player's base salary going forward.

So the question is, are Roy and Marion's base salaries for 2010 and 2011 low enough to give them some trade value?

Roy has zero trade value making 9 mil a year. But perhpas a team would like to trade for his rights of he only counted 4 mil a year over the next 3.

False. We can sign one big-money UFA even if we don't lose anyone. We can sign as many UFAs for "medium" money (or less) as we want, even if we don't lose anyone. Plus, for every UFA we lose, we can sign a UFA for a similar contract or less.

Only the Saints, Vikings, Colts and Jets cannot sign a UFA without losing one.

Players cut won't count.

True. We can sign anyone we want who was cut, for whatever amount we want. And cutting a player won't affect whom we can and cannot sign.

You can cut any player at any time. If they have guaranteed money in 2010 or beyond, you pay them that amount (actually, you pay the current value of that amount) when you cut them.

Both of them have bonuses that have to be paid this season. I don't see either of them having any trade value without restructuring their contract.

Well, this doesn't sound as bad as first thought. Why is there so much doom and gloom over being in the top 8 with regards to free agency and an uncapped year? Perhaps it has been posted and I missed it...or I never paid attention to it because I thought we were going to win it all this year.

:)

Thank you much Adam.

It is nice to see we can at least make one significant OL FA signing. Now lets hope we can actually find someone worth signing.

Because some media sources mistakenly reported the details of the "Final Eight Plan." They applied the restrictions on the final four teams to all eight teams, rather than reporting the lesser restrictions on the fifth through eighth teams.

AHHHH I see said the blind man.

While I got you on the line, I might as well ask if you know of a worthy OL FA to be prospect?

Just because he cost us so much, that doesn't mean we have to play him, if he sucks (which he does) why put him on the field instead of someone who will produce.

Is there any way we can dump his butt..

I think that we have to give him one more year to see if he can do anything. If he doesnt do anything then i think that they need to find a way to get rid of him and if there is still no salary cap next year it might be easier to get rid of him

That's the stupid philosophy we have. Maybe we'll learn to stop doing it.

Sorry Adam, I'm a bit thick and not getting this. Is this true?

1. There is no salary cap in the 2010 season. Teams can spend as much as they like.

2. The Saints, Vikings, Colts and Jets are not permitted to sign any free agents until they lose one. Then, they can sign one for every free agent they lose during free agency. Cut players do not count.

3. The Cowboys, Chargers, Ravens and Cardinals can sign one “big money” free agent for any amount that they desire, and sign any number of other free agents for the same contract they already had or less.

4. All other NFL teams can sign any free agents they like for as much as they like.

Adam, please answer me this. Shouldn't it be easier to trade players next year ( if it is uncapped ) due to the fact that the team that trades the player will have to take on the pro-rated amount of the signing bonus and it is an uncapped year?

By the same token, shouldn't it be easier to cut players next yerar for the same reason?

Currently, yes.

Correct.

3. The Cowboys, Chargers, Ravens and Cardinals can sign one “big money” free agent for any amount that they desire, and sign any number of other free agents for the same contract they already had or less.

The "any number of other free agents" can be signed for less than a certain dollar amount. In addition, when those teams lose a true UFA, they can sign another true UFA for essentially the same amount or less.

4. All other NFL teams can sign any free agents they like for as much as they like.

Correct, as long as the contracts comply with the CBA.

Adam, at what point does the 2010 season officially become uncapped?

I'm pretty sure the first day of the 2010 League Year is March 5.

The NFL might push that back, like it did last time the CBA was renegotiated, or it might set an earlier deadline for those negotiations. So, for example, the league might say that if no settlement is reached by Feb. 28, the 2010 season will be uncapped, so teams have a few days to complete their preparations for it.

Thank you, sir. The prevailing notion was that the uncapped year would be a boon for players. Looks the opposite to me, seems they don't get the better end of the bargain.

On the surface, these rules seem very appealing to me.
