Quietly, Austin has matched Owens

Despite getting a late start to the season, Miles is rivaling the best production numbers-wise that Owens ever gave us. Which is quite a testament to both he and Romo, considering Owens was a top 2 receiver in the game during his time here.

Here are the numbers:

MILES AUSTIN
2009: 65 catches for 1,138 yards, 11 TDs

TERRELL OWENS
2008: 69 catches for 1,052 yards, 10 TDs
2007: 81 catches for 1,355 yards, 15 TDs
2006: 85 catches for 1,180 yards and 13 TDs

In Austin's 10 starts, he has (by my rough calculations): 60 catches for 1,057 yards and 10 TDs. It's pretty easy to figure out that translates to 6 catches for about 105 yards and one TD per game started. He has scored a TD in four straight games and has recorded 100-plus yard outings in 3 of the last 4.

Lastly, Austin currently leads all NFC receivers in yards and TDs.

As big as I have become on Austin, we still have to factor that he doesnt see the type of coverage that Owens does.

The numbers in your signature appear inaccurate.

Um, the guy had 999 yards before last night with 10 TD's. He HAS been seeing the coverage that Owens does. :bang2:

As of the 10 games he's started, he's averaging about 100 yards and 1 TD per game. You can do the math as to what that adds up to had he started for all 16 games. TO never had a 1600 yard, 16 TD season.

Quietly Romo is playing the best ball of his career.. Should be a candidate for the MVP talk. Austin should make the pro bowl.

No, he hasnt. Sometimes he gets doubled, but he sees plenty 1-on-1s. Owens hardly ever saw that in his prime in Dallas.

Rainman and Dolly, I'll update later.

Austin has got a shot at Owens' best hardage season (with the Cowboys) at 1355 yards and needs 217 yards over the last two games. The 15 TDs will be tough to match as he will need two a game the rest of the way. His per start numbers are unbelievable and would probably the best ever in Cowboys history - 1700 yards and 16 TDs.

Regardless, I think 2009 Austin is actually better than Owens was any of the years he was here because he allows the offense to run and doesn't worry whether he is making alot of catches, yards or TDs.

If we could just work out the OL kinks, this offense could really take off. I think the other final missing piece of the puzzle is putting in Ogletree. His speed and quickness compliments Austin's speed and power very well. He will eat up all the man coverage he gets with team's focused on our running game, Witten and Austin.

Unless you're getting coaches film, and I find it unlikely since the NFL doesn't release it to the public, you have no idea what kind of coverage Austin or Owens are receiving.

I think Austin gets into the Pro Bowl this year. He has been a great story and I think people have taken to him and his smiling, humble demeanor.

Gotta love this note from Mosley's story tonight:

Miles Austin is obviously the Cowboys' No. 1 wide receiver at this point. He had the big touchdown early in the game, but it was his catch and run on a third-and-long with 6:28 left in the game that held the Saints' comeback at bay. You can tell Romo has so much faith in Austin. Conversely, why would anyone have faith in Roy Williams at this point? His drop on a quick slant in the fourth quarter allowed the Saints to continue their comeback. I'd bench the guy. He really has no business being on the field -- especially with players such as Kevin Ogletree and Patrick Crayton making clutch catches.

Yes, I think it's safe to say the leading receiver in the NFC is our "No. 1 wide receiver."

In other news, Romo might get the nod over Kitna next week.

I am not sure about that at all. In Owens last season he sometimes saw single coverage-----AND teams have been doubling Miles.

Did you see the coverage on Miles TD? Corner + safety over the top biased his way.

Miles might be getting *MORE* attention than Owens was getting last season.

I should clarify. I was speaking of the Owens we saw in '07. The only guy who got more coverage than him that year was Moss. And I think we also need to factor consistency. And like I said, I wasnt implying Austin isnt getting double coverage. He's just not getting it at the rate T.O. did.

InmanRoshi, I dont need to see game tape on Randy Moss and Reggie Wayne to know that Moss gets far more respect and coverage than Wayne does, despite the fact that Wayne has had a better individual season.

Im not saying Austin doesnt get double coverage, cause he does. He just doesnt get it like T.O. did when he was in his prime.

So much for the "T.O. made Romo" argument.

The future is bright my friends.

Don't forget his classic moment giving Ed Werder the bird during an interview.

Let me start by saying Im LOVING what austin is doing. I was so fearful that we didnt have anyone near that caliber on this team for Romo to throw to. I am so happy to be wrong about this. Let me also say that you are right, stat for stat, Austin has nearly matched (could surpass) Owens stats. (here comes the but)

BUT, when you talk about Miles replacing owens people fail to realize Owens got those stats while seeing a coverage that Austin has not seen year. In turn part of owens production is what he did for the other people on the field...the stats that he opened up for others.

I will end by saying this. I hope I am wrong again. I hope Miles start seeing that same coverage starting next week.

I was thinking throughout the game if we had one more WR to complement Austin with real speed/acceleration . . . .

Maybe Ogletree? But speed definitely kills.

What I do remember seeing while Owens was here was huge windows left open for Witten to catch the ball 15-20 yards down field because Owens would drag at least 2 defenders with him way over the top.

That doesn't happen anymore.
