I don’t believe religion has anything to do with him not making the big hits. It is just ANOTHER excuse. EXCUSE after EXCUSE is made for Roy OVER and OVER again. Maybe just maybe, he is just not the same player anymore. I don’t care about the excuses anymore. Roy, put up or shut up.

I don't know, I think religion changes people's perspectives on life -- or, let me rephrase that, it CAN.

I'm no psychologist, but just taking a guess based on Roy's own comments, I'd guess he used to look at himself as a football player. He lived for the big hits. Now, he's a man of God. He looks in the mirror and likely sees a different person with different priorities.

You know i dont know if it was the big hits that used to offset his coverage abilities when he was a rookie..but then if u look at those highlight he was incredibly more lean and agile

how much bearings do our personal trainers have in this as well? arent these guys paid to make sure players come in fit and ready for a grinding season? how come no one paid him a off-season visit to show that somebody actually cared? how could we of let this happen
His play, other than the big hits, is pretty much the same as it has always been. But when he made big hits fans loved him. When he stopped, they only see the (supposed) negative.

This is a direct quote from Roy on the Michael Irvin Show. Now I know he feels the same way I do when he is on the field. Please get rid of him. He is really giving me ulcers. A linebacker can cover better than he does. I was really hoping he would turn it around last year, but I knew deep down he is not passionate about football. Remember Micheal Irvin in his day trying to get himself in the best shape of his life. Last year I really thought Roy would get himself in great shape, what he did is a crash diet before training camp. Please cut him now. He has no confidence and is not passionate about football.

For the 50 millionth time, WE CANT BECAUSE OF HIS CAP HIT.:bang2:

But i think his decline in play happened slowly over time and before his ”rebirth”. I just think it is an excuse that he would embrace just to buy him more time to fool the masses. I don’t think fans are buying his act anymore.

Where are the supporters now? You know, those guys who said that I was crazy for saying he can't cover OR hit anymore....

I can't believe the transformation this guy had. Just a shame. If he was playing the way he used to 3 years ago, I would almost guarantee a super bowl.

Pathetic. He is just collecting a check at this point.

If he doesnt want to knock somebody's teeth out anymore because he has found religion, I am cool with that.

Problem is getting smoked by the TE up the seam for 6 has nothing to do with religion at all.

I really think we move Roy if he doesnt pick his game up this year, next year after June 1 would be the first time we could even consider moving Roy.

True, true ... Kelly Rowland used to be the excuse. I get what you're saying.

Oh Boy.

There are many players who have found God and still play to the best of their abilities. I sure hope i misread that, but it sounds like Williams is saying he doesn't feel the need to make the same sacrifice/effort now, because he feels fulfilled enough due to his beliefs.

If I was a coach and I heard that speech (if it came out the way it is written) I would SEE RED FLAGS all over this player.

Does this sound like a guy that is going to get any better for this team. I have zero confidence in Williams getting better.

I am going to have to listen to that interview, but I have to say as a fan and a Christian too, this is a bit disturbing on more than one level.

How would you like your Doctor to say well, i give 80% in my work now, since "my cup is overflowing". Yikes!

Gripe about him all you want for getting burnt, I will even join in, but don't get onto him for changing his playing style after finding God.
Hmmm... how about this.

Not only will I continue to get on him for changing his style...

I'll rip into his "finding God" as an EXTREMELY SELFISH excuse to let down Jerry, the coaching staff, his teammates, and his fans.

As someone else pointed out, Reggie White was also a man of God, and it didn't stop him from dominating on the field or delivering big hits.

If Roy feels that he can't be the Roy Williams Jerry is PAYING him to be, and can't be the Roy Williams the coaching staff and his teammates NEED him to be, he should QUIT.

Either do whatever's necessary to DO YOUR FREAKIN' JOB the way you were HIRED to do it...

Or get the hell out of the way, so we can find a player who still has the fire to do whatever it takes to play this game at his highest possible level.

Oh, but he "found God", so we should all go easy on him? *** that.

From what I can see, it hasn't made him a better person. It hasn't made him a stand-up guy in the least. Stand-up guys don't betray their owner and quit on their coaches and teammates who are counting on them.

Screw Roy Williams.

I think it's time I tossed my #31 jersey in the trash, next to Roy's dedication.

Somehow I'm still fired up about this too.

Reading between the lines, I hear "not putting in the same effort" as "getting big hits". As many have mentioned, fans are looking for plays (proper tackling).

Of course the horsecollar tackles are OK though, because those are within the new belief system Roy has embraced despite being dangerous and against the rules. Sorry not buying.

Somewhere the Minister of Defense, Reggie White, is turning in his grave and looking down from heaven shaking his head. Does anyone think White would ever have said anything like this OR RESPECTED ANYONE that has?

Everyone's beliefs are different, but this does sound like an excuse for less than one's best!

At least we know where the problem lies.

Jerry needs to get Richard Dawkins on the phone NOW! Fly him to Dallas for a one-on-one session with Roy... he'll be cured in no time. :)

It seems like the ONLY thing we have as a basis to hope for a renewed Roy is his new jersey number. Not renewed dedication, work ethic, athleticism or fire -- just the shirt on his back.

I'd hold off on buying those No. 38 jerseys, folks.

Its a bummer.

The season is months away and we already know what we are getting out him.

A player that is playing because he is getting paid. Period.

The thing that bothered me most about the interview was that he was talking about covering one on one, he mentioned that it was almost like a guessing game, that it wasnt completely that way if you watched film and did the studying you required then you would be in a better spot. That just told me that he hasnt done the studying required to get the job done.

Campo can only help him so much. He wants to babble all that religious nonsense but if thats the case then he needs to start telling himself, "the lord helps those that help themselves."

Thats really why i hate prosperity evagelists. Put your faith in god and he will provide they say but at the end of the day you need to get off your butt and make it happen cause people get things done not pie in the sky.

What a difference a year makes, huh? I don't see anymore Roy Williams Kool-Aid drinkers anymore, now that they really have a leg to stand on to defend him with.

"People will say Roy is really not making any big hits. Ever since I rededicated my life to God, OK, I haven't been making the big hits, but we got further than we ever did when I was living of the world. When I rededicated my life, you know what I'm saying, God showed me that you don't have to live of the world and I will bless you. He has basically overflown my cup. He has shown me so much.

"Please believe the hits will come as we get more comfortable with my defense, with the 3-4 and coach Phillips' way that he wants us to play. Please believe the hits will come. I mean, I'm going to have to get comfortable in this defense."
how come every single person in this thread has ignored this quote? it's like you just read a part of the quote and not the whole thing.. if anything, i thought he came out sounding very good.. he admitted he hasn't been up to par (people are always wanting him to admit fault and here he does), but that he promises the hits will be coming back.. what's not to like about this interview? you guys only read what you want to read..

Roy was never the best in coverage, but any DB that gives up a TD can make up for it (mostly) by making a play, be it a INT, a third down pass breakup, or a hit that simply makes the receiver quit for the rest of the game (see the sideline hit on Toomer 100 years ago).

But Roy does none of those things now. He doesn't slam Mark Brunell to the Texas Stadium turf, firing up his teammates. He doesn't force Brandon Jacobs to fumble at the goalline. When he does make a big play, it's always for the other team- his horse collars and pass coverage deficiencies.

Hopefully Camps can get him straight, otherwise, to me, Roy Williams is that receiver in Detroit we've been trying like heck to get.

I disagree completely. I think his tackling has gotten much worse. He isn't even a solid wrap up tackler anymore.

Fewer game changing plays (interceptions, forced fumbles) and I don't even remember the last time he sniffed a QB.

I think a lot of people were in love with the big hit, but his basic fundamentals seem to have regressed.

People like to complain about how awful Roy was in deep coverage.....he was if anyone actually ran a deep pattern that he had to pick up, but he's much better at moving forward to the ball than having to turn and run with a guy down low.
