I am actually ashamed of most of you. I can't believe what I've read.

You want to shun Roy for not wanting to hit people hard? Bashing Roy for being religious? Cut Roy? Spare me.

Maybe he doesn't want to hurt himself. Ya know, it does hurt to wallop someone. Take it from someone who's had any potential football career ruined because he got jacked.

Spare me. You sicken me. You wouldn't be saying this crap had Roy played like he used to and still admitted he rededicated himself to God.
Im talking about the guy as a football player. he flatout stinks. his relationship with god is none of my business. as a football player he sucks and should not start here anymore. that's what this is about. this is about his football.PERIOD!

If you want to talk about his play, don't be so quick to blame him. That whole secondary suffered. As a safety, he shouldn't have to pick up the slack of his teammates. That's more of a rip on them. Newman did his job while Henry and Reeves didn't. That's where he got hung out to dry. He wasn't asked to do as much back in his "good days."

This is a direct quote from Roy on the Michael Irvin Show. Now I know he feels the same way I do when he is on the field. Please get rid of him. He is really giving me ulcers. A linebacker can cover better than he does. I was really hoping he would turn it around last year, but I knew deep down he is not passionate about football. Remember Micheal Irvin in his day trying to get himself in the best shape of his life. Last year I really thought Roy would get himself in great shape, what he did is a crash diet before training camp. Please cut him now. He has no confidence and is not passionate about football.
this guy has zero heart.

He was saying that's what his critics say.

If he was saying that's why he didn't hit hard, why would he go on to say "the hits will come" several times? Is he planning to forget God?

Sorry, but the video tape doesnt lie. Roy was getting beat like a drum in coverage when HE WAS THE MAIN COVER GUY. It was not his teammates that were out of postion, he many times was the guy that was out of position.

How bout some personal responsibility? How bout Roy owning it and saying, yea I have struggled but I am rededicating myself and changing my # to my old college days.

You make it sound like Roy is being persecuted for the sins of his teammates. if that is the case, then why are the coaches sitting his arse on the bench on 3rd downs. If it was all his teammates and not him, why would the coaches bench him then. That is the major hole in your argument.

Also, Jerry, Wade, Stewart, Campo, and even Roy admit that he has struggled lately. Campo, his position coach now, says he will try to get Roy playing like he used to. Why would the coaches and the owner say this if Roy is not the one struggling and it was all his teammates? That is hole #2 in your argument.

I could go on and list many more holes in your argument, but there is no point in it.

Actually, alot of critics were saying Roy doesn't play the same, putting his faith at #1 and football at #2. When the IBOC members showed up at training camp there were a bunch of articles talking about how Roy is more concerned about being remembered for humanitarian accomplishments than on the field accomplishments. People even took issue with his United Way commercials. The worst is someone like JFE who wrote one article calling Roy dirty, purposely tackling players to injure them and that he could have ended the career of McNabb, then turn around and write a bunch of articles about him turning soft.

This thread is sad. There's so much to be optimistic about this team. I'd have to say Roy's our one negative.

I do think he's on to something with this number change. Make it a little harder for the opposition to find him. Maybe he should change it weekly.:p:

Yes, they do. We've been hearing that for the past few years -- that he hasn't been the same since he "found religion."

When a DMN story was posted here about Roy's off-field life and his religion, the first responses were "Maybe a lil satan will help roy wrap up this week, now we know whats wrong with him" and "No wonder why he doesn't hit hard anymore."

And a few more quotes from Cowboys fans --

-- "Roy just needs to realize that Jesus doesn't mind if he lays the wood on Sundays."

-- "roy found god...he's now more interested in being a good guy doing good works."

-- "I honestly think something has changed about Roy since he found God. He used to seem to hate people and want to knock them into next week... now he seems to love everyone. That may be a great thing for Roy Williams the man.. but it may not be such a great thing for Roy Williams the football player."

You can find comments like that all over the place.

I'm not saying that he's beyond reproach. I am saying that if his play was that bad, then Phillips would have benched him. Since he wasn't, you are forced to conclude that the players behind would have either suffered as badly or wouldn't have been successful as Roy has been. Either way, Roy was still the better choice despite his shortcomings.

If you want to assign personal responsibility, everyone would have to be accountable to everyone else. It's the team mentality. A team wins together. A team loses together. A team fails or succeeds together. No one man can either be the direct cause of success or failure. Personal responsibility doesn't come with the territory. Now, if you want a patsy, which I strongly suspect you are hinting at, yeah... it could be Roy or Reeves. If Roy was getting beat like a drum, Reeves was getting beat like a red-headed stepchild.

Again... it's the team mentality. Somebody, however, has to take the heat. The one readily identifiable is Roy because he openly admitted he has problems. He's not the only one. He's just the one everybody wants to get rid of. If it was Newman, you'd say it about him. If it was Hamlin, you'd say it about him. Teams devise an offense around a defense's weakest link. When it wasn't Reeves, it was Roy. It's about who can be picked on. Roy was never a strong defensive cover guy. He was never asked to, really. His game was in the box. He succeeds there. Stick him one-on-one and he will falter. It's simple position mechanics. Now, if you want him to bull rush the line and get his hands on the ball, that's his bread and butter. He's still good at that. If you ask a person to do more than his experience will think he's capable of, he will not live up to expectations.

The same comparison can be drawn to LaVar Arrington. Greg Williams let him do whatever he wanted. When that stopped, he slumped. Play to his strengths... not his weaknesses. You're not going to ask a quarterback to run the ball. Don't ask Roy to cover up in the box. Safeties are supposed to be good in deep coverage, not up in the box. Defensive line generates pressure. Linebackers suppress forward ball movement in the box. Safeties suppress deep movement while defensive backs are supposed to stop the movement through the air.

If you want to use the notion that Roy sucks in coverage, go right ahead. Anybody will suck in coverage if the play is designed to beat you to the punch or create confusion and disrupt assignments. Just remember that the next time you see anybody get beat. Not everybody is proficient at cover skills.

And to top things off... if you want Roy gone, who will you bring in that is better than him? You can't count on a rookie. If a veteran free agent is so much better, then why isn't he on a team? Furthermore, you can't count on a team to trade off a veteran. So, you're left with the choice to either stick with what you have or get someone better. Unfortunately, the latter isn't always an option.

So, take it for whatever it's worth. The "Be Rid of Roy" bandwagon may still be rolling but it might not move anywhere.

Very good post expressing my sentiments exactly. I do understand the anger of many fans here, but I don't feel the need to personally attack the man's character. If you can't agree on anything else, you can at least realize that he is being a good role model and doing good things in life.

Maybe you are rationalizing his noble personal agenda because Roy does have character issues. There is a payoff in everything we do and spiritual gratification is another but at least Roy is a giving person off the field and I do admire that.

However as an NFL key player he has acted and operated fraudulently. If your heart is not into fully performing your job in a very physical and even violent sport - QUIT. Don't position yourself for a higher paying, extended contract. That is highly unfair to the organization while displacing a capable player more than willing to help the team.

While you are at it don't hold back making hard clean hits while having no issues horse collar tackling an opponent from behind and snapping his legs.

Also how about not blaming the media and your colleagues and the scheme for your inability to cover or tackle like you used to.

We played plenty of zone. What this means is that in all possibility Reeves wasn't the only one to be blamed, because somebody was handing the offensive player off to him.

Since he wasn't, you are forced to conclude that the players behind would have either suffered as badly or wouldn't have been successful as Roy has been. Either way, Roy was still the better choice despite his shortcomings.

Maybe because we paid so much for him. Maybe because we didn't have a better alternative at the moment, you know, Stephen Davis, 'aka' killer.

And they were playing zone. So maybe they both sucked, and Roy was often absolved of blame because the last one in the picture was Reeves. And Reeves doesn't get paid as much as Roy. Reeves was filling in, Roy is paid starte money.

The fact is, even Jerry said that they would be looking to cater the defense to Roy's strengths. He played more in the box this year than he ever has. What happened was that he had his worse year ever.

The fact is, your making it seem like Roy has taken the heat. The guy has never taken the heat for the last few years. It is only now that he is being forced to finally admit that his game has suffered, because the criticism is coming from everywhere. For years he has been harping the old, "you people just don't understand football" routine. There was not a game that went by where Roy could be seen pointing the blame on another player when an opposing player scores a TD.

Even in this interview, he is claiming that it is his familiarity with the system that is preventing the big hits. Sorry, but big hits aren't a result of the scheme. And further, this is ample refutation that it has nothing to do with his shoulder injury. If Roy was hurt, than he should flat out say it. But yet again, it is all about somebody else being the problem.

And those people that are crying that people shouldn't be talking about Roy's religion as it concerns football need to tell that to Roy. He brings his religion into the game.

I would just like to point out how many safties play man to man coverage on the top TE's in the league? I've seen Roy on Islands against these guys and still been able to keep up even though he is at a disadvantage. Roy doesn't hit as hard however bill parcells told him to change the way he tackles and not lead with his head because it will shorten his career. We do not need sport center highlight reels we need results and if you look this has been one of his best years stat wise and he was suspended a game. I don't see the RW that gave up those deep balls to santana moss on that MNF game. He keeps the ball in front of him and makes the play.

If anyone has the stats of RW thrown at yards allowed and TD's given up from this pass season that would be nice. Also TE's in the league nowadays are such a mismatch for opposing defense. To big for corners and safties to fast for LB's .
