James Gandolfini -- who famously played Tony Soprano on "The Sopranos" -- died earlier today in Italy ... TMZ has learned.

That's terrible. I hope it ends up being not true.

I remember seeing him in the crowd when the Cowboys played the Jets in New York in 2011.

No sequels, no movie. Guess we know for sure how the series ended now. RIP.

CanadianCowboysFan thought this was a great moment to crack a joke about the final episode of the show.

RIP Gandolfini. A fast paced life and being overweight for the majority of your life are not a good mix.

Wow!

Just stunning.

So sorry to hear of this.

Lead actor on the best TV show I've ever watched.

My thoughts too. R.I.P. and condolences to his family.

Doing a quick Google image search on him, can't say it's a huge shock though. He had to be pushing 300-plus.

Real pity he didnt get to tackle a great role after the show ended. That ending is still the most over hyped and read into crap I have ever seen, Chase just hated the viewers and wanted to go out like that. Shame, bad ending to a fantastic show that faltered after season 3 but still was so watchable all they way through.

Yeah, I think a lot of folks kept waiting for him to get that post-Soprano's killer role... Never happened. Now he's been killed by a possible heart attack.

Sad at his passing and sad that we won't be getting any Soprano sequels.

Interesting take on Chase. His interviews did seem a bit "anti-viewer".

He will be missed, won me over in "The Mexican". He and his wife had a daughter this past October, shame she will not remember him except from film :(

A great pity.

Tony Soprano one of the greatest characters to grace our screens small or large IMHO.

RIP

It fit the moment, like the jokes about the stilleto killer.
