Draft Shake Up To Benefit Dallas?
By Rafael Vela
Update: The Dolphins scouting honcho Jeff Ireland addressed the press this afternoon and gave a road map to the Dolphins’ draft plans, saying the team is not satisfied with its talent at offensive tackle, receiver, cornerback and nose tackle.
Those last three positions have lots of overlap with Dallas’ needs. Given that Miami and Dallas run very similar offensive and defensive schemes, it’s a good thing Dallas drafts a few spots ahead of Miami at the turn of each round.
Ireland also mentioned that Miami has received a couple of offers for the top pick but nothing yet that would make them move down. He also caused a minor stir when he mentioned the team needs to draft a player who could be “the pillar of our defense.”
Everybody is blowing smoke this time of year…
– The Chiefs are shopping DE Jared Allen to the Vikings and the Bucs. A move to either, but especially to ‘Tampa Bay, could affect the players Dallas has available with the 22nd pick.
Allen was franchised by Kansas City after he and the team failed to agree on a long-term extension. Were Minnesota or Tampa Bay to sign him to an offer sheet that the Chiefs failed to match, Kansas City would be due two first-round draft picks. It’s possible, however, that the Chiefs would take less, say, a first rounder and a third or fourth rounder.
The Bucs have been rumored to favor a wide receiver or a cornerback at pick 20. Were they to give up the pick to K.C., it might increase Dallas’ odds of seeing one of the top CBs drop to them.
