The Raiders have zeroed in on a veteran quarterback they would like to acquire while they ponder the possibility of drafting LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell.
Oakland has entered into trade negotiations with Lions backup quarterback Josh McCown, who signed with Detroit last season with the idea of being a starter, but he lost his job early to Jon Kitna. Instead of pouting and sulking, though, McCown was a model teammate to a point where he helped out when the Lions needed someone to run some wide receiver routes.
The Raiders have only Andrew Walter and Josh Booty as their main options at quarterback. McCown fits because he's had starting experience and he's mobile in the pocket. Plus, he has a strong arm for downfield throws.
"Josh signed with the Lions and wanted to play," his agent, Mike McCartney, said. "He deserves to play."
McCown is in the final year of a two-year contract and scheduled to earn $2 million this season. While other teams might be interested in considering him as a backup, McCown is definitely interested in the chance of going to the Raiders. If the Raiders acquire him, it would take the pressure off playing Russell early in the 2007 season.
Carr's on the clock: David Carr made visits to the Carolina Panthers and the Seattle Seahawks and he's interested in making a reasonably quick decision on where he wants to lands. While other teams, including the Dolphins, are interested in Carr, the former Texans quarterback is willing to pick a team and begin work in their offseason program.
Carolina has QB options: Meanwhile, the Panthers liked their visit with former Lions and Dolphins quarterback Joey Harrington. Whether it's Carr or Harrington, the Panthers like the idea of bringing in a former No. 1 draft choice who has starting experience and giving him the chance to back up Jake Delhomme. If Delhomme got hurt, the Panthers would have a talented, young QB who could step in and run the offense possibly at a playoff-caliber level. What makes it easier to be a Carolina quarterback is that it likes to run the ball, and that takes away plenty of pressure.
Can Tampa, Detroit swing a deal? What will be interesting to see is if the Bucs can work a trade with the Lions for the No. 2 pick on April 28. The Bucs draft fourth in the first round and clearly would like to land Georgia Tech wide receiver Calvin Johnson. The Lions would like to drop back from No. 2 and acquire a draft choice. It would be hard for Lions general manager Matt Millen to draft Johnson because he's drafted a wide receiver in the first round three consecutive years. Two of them didn't work out. The Lions also don't seem to be interested in taking Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn at No. 2.
Turnin' on The Burner: The interest in Chargers restricted free agent Michael "The Burner" Turner is starting to sizzle. He had a good visit with the Titans, who are clearly interested in trading for him. Turner had flight problems getting to Buffalo for a visit, so Bills owner Ralph Wilson dispatched his private jet to get him into town (Turner visited Buffalo on Thursday). Two other teams -- the Cowboys and Jets -- are monitoring the talks. It will take at least a first-round choice -- either this year or next season -- to get Turner, who was a former fifth-round pick but clearly has first-round talent. Expect trade talks to heat up over the next couple of days.
Gray agrees to re-sign with Seattle: The Seahawks reached a two-year deal to re-sign guard Chris Gray. The Seahawks initially talked about trying to sign Gray for the $820,000 veteran's minimum. Gray's position is that he started at a low salary for the past two years. Guard Pork Chop Womack re-signed for $1.2 million on a one-year deal. Presumably, the Seahawks paid him enough this year to eclipse Womack's salary. Mr. Irrelevant: For what it's worth, David Macklin's one-year, $760,000 deal with the Commanders made him the 100th player to move to a different team in free agency. Gray's re-signing was the 80th, leaving only 127 unrestricted free agents without jobs. Five from that number have already announced their retirements.
