1) Had that undrafted FA QB from Florida Appleby not gotten hurt early, we may have never seen Cooper Rush shine in the preseason. I am guessing based on pedigree that Appleby would have gotten more reps over Rush.

2) Speaking of Rush, what would you take for a trade right now if some team called and asked? Say a team offered a 3rd round pick, would you take it?

3) I would not trade straight up Cooper Rush for Paxton Lynch, Hackenburg, or Connor Cook.

4) OL Cooper vs Eagle OL Warmack will be an interesting comparison this year. Which will turn out to be the better acquisition? If I remember correctly, Warmack is still competing for a starting position on the Eagles line. Is Warmack their starter at G?

5) Still haven't seen Jaylon Smith cover down the seam in the preseason yet. Should be interesting to see him do it soon. And will be interesting to see him cover a lot of ground in the middle of the field on passing plays. He looks like Urlacher-size out there in space.

6) Not to nitpick Jaylon Smith, but I wish he would quit trying for the kill-shot tackle all the time and just make the sure, wrap-up, textbook waist tackle (if there is such a thing). I'm happy with the solid, sure tackle. Less chance of getting injured in my opinion than going for the big killer hit.

7) Not to nitpick Jaylon smith part two, but no need to celebrate simple tackles. I get it you are so excited to be back out on the field, but let's limit the celebrations to TDs, sacks, and turnovers. Pretty much goes for every player and not just Smith. Be humble on the field, celebrate as a team later after a win.

8) Haven't heard anyone criticizing the Jaylon Smith pick recently. Or comparing him to Myles Jack or whoever either. So, I'm guessing everyone likes the pick now, even those who were very vocal against it last year. :)

9) I am hoping for Jaylon Smith to have a monster year. Thank you Jerry for picking him. I thought it was a strange pick on draft day. But, am very, very happy.

9) Still concerned with the lack of picks and fumble recoveries

I think it's a stretch to hope Jaylon has a monster year.

I would be happy if gets gets more comfortable physically and mentally as the year goes on.

Serviceable QBs are rare - how many in the league right now? 50? That's probably way too generous. Guys that can actually win games? 15? Rush could be part of that pack. I wouldn't trade him, period. Kind of like how Belichik held onto Garrapolo.

I ageee for now.... no way I take a third for him.
However, if he is truly as good as he has looked thus far, there is no possible way to keep him when his contract is up. Therefore, as soon as we figure this out and other teams see a few more tastes of it...I extract minimally a first round pick and more for him, knowing we will eventually lose him anyway.

On Jaylon pick, I was a big critic. I'm still cautiously optimistic but still unsure he plays as well as everyone has billed. When he makes some splash plays this season I will fully retract my criticism.

We all root for the player and the person, Jaylon Smith. He seems to be one of the greatest persons the Cowboys have ever drafted...and has other-worldly potential if it all comes together.

If some fans here don't like the draft pick to select him...I understand that. He wasn't able to contribute last year...and how much he can help in season two is still unknown.

For "random musings", that sure was focused on two players. Lol

Let's hope Rush never plays a down here, and Jaylon is a superstar two years from now.

Jaylon Smith a ways away from being 100%. If they play him too much before he is ready his is just going to get hurt again.

On Rush, it's not a safe assumption that his ability wouldn't have surfaced just because another long shot QB happened to be on the roster. Luke McKown didn't appear to offer much of a speed bump, anyway. And I wouldn't trade a young QB who's shown promise for a mid round pick, no. Draft picks for QBs are just projections. You pretty much know when you get them on your roster whether they can play or not. If they can't, the pick is a waste. No point giving up a guy with promise for somebody else's failure. That said, we just know right now that Rush can think quickly enough to beat preseason defenses, and that he's willing to push the ball aggressively downfield while taking care of it. That's not enough to know if he can actually play in this league. Only that he's got a shot.

Re: Jaylon, I don't mind celebrating drive stopping plays. I agree with you re: regular old tackles. I like the player, but hated the pick. And as far as I'm concerned, the pick was still a stupid unnecessary risk when there were safer bets on the table. The fact that a stupid risk appears to have paid off doesn't make it any less stupid.

All I think about Chance Warmack whenever I hear his name is how much we debated whether or not those two OGs would go in the top 10 and then Risen Star wanting to take Warmack #1 overall. I was wrong about where those guys would be taken (I was sure one of them would be there for us). But it doesn't appear I was wrong about where they should have been taken. As for which is a better player, Cooper at least has the injury excuse. Warmack has terrible footwork and looks to me to have been an outright bust. Both players are journeymen borderline starters in this league at this point, which is pretty surprising given how highly regarded both were coming out.

Smith has been off the field for about 2 years, his celebrating the little things on the first two games back NOT a concern to me.

Best case scenario with Rush would be that he gets to start a couple meaningless games down the stretch, ala Matt Flynn when he was with GB. Rush shows up big and some QB-hungry team is willing to give up optimum draft picks to acquire him during the off season.

I enjoyed your post.
  1. Fun and an insightful observation.
  2. I would take the 3rd round pick in a heartbeat. But since that won't happen, you hold out until you've built value with the young gun. You keep his services for the next 2 years and then look to seriously deal at that point if Dak is what everyone thinks he is and Rush has built his stock to a level that makes teams think he could be an effective starter.
  3. Me either.
  4. I think Cooper, if he stays healthy, will be the runaway winner of that award.
  5. Yeah, I'm as big a Jaylon fan as you will find on this board, but I agree with you. When he is over the overzealous tendencies that plague him right now and he is able to get back to the fantastic coverage LB that he naturally is, we will all know he is truly back.
  6. He's just overzealous right now. He will regulate in due time.
  7. I like the energy he brings to the team and hope that when he becomes phenomenal, because I have no doubt a healthy Jaylon will be just that, that he is able to duplicate that contagious aura he exudes right now. I do understand your concern however.
  8. I always loved it.
  9. I think by midseason he will be a game changer for this team. By the offseason I expect management to think of him as the one one irreplaceable cog on that side of the ball.
