Random thought: Romo reminds me in several ways of Marc Bulger...

And this is not a bad thing by any stretch, especially if he routinely approaches the yardage totals Bulger puts up when he plays full seasons.

What got me on this tangent was something about the 51 yard bomb to Owens under the dome lights the other night. It reminded me of many I've seen Bulger throw to Holt and Bruce over the last couple of years. I also think both guys have had somewhat similar starts to their careers in that neither was expected to excel or start games the year they got into action; as many will recall, it was Roy W's sack of Warner in 2002 that led to Jamie Martin and then finally Bulger getting his crack as a starter.

Both also have solid, above-average arms, above-average escapability, similar height and weight, and showed more than enough in their first incomplete seasons as starters to be the starter going into their team's next training camp. Bulger also started out with a bit of an interception problem, but has progressively curtailed that over the years, pretty much the same way I expect Romo to do as he continues to get better and better.

Like I said at the beginning of the post, if Romo lives in that 3800-3900 yard neighborhood for the next 8-10 seasons, I won't be complaining (provided that yardage total isn't inflated by a lack of a running game on our part!).

I just thought I'd post this to get some feedback and because I know that it's Favre that Romo is mostly compared to.

Nice post. I agree. I think if he looks similar to any QB in the league, it's Bulger.

Hasselbeck, with more moxie and more hair.

He looks and reminds me of Brees. Same mobility and ability to buy time in the pocket.

Haven't seen much of Bulgar's play here in Tampa area so leave it to you guys to make the comparisons--but I've never heard of Bulgar being considered a top notch QB which is where I'd love for Romo to hang out. I think Romo has only played in 8 & 1/2 games but he's already thrown for over 2400 yard yards, 16 TDs & 10 INTs with a completion record around 68%. Makes you wonder what he will do in a whole season but I'm betting he could crack the 4,000 yard marker fairly often and hopefully set a new Cowboy TD record (currently held by Danny White at 29).

Really like Romo's competitive nature, his love of the game & think he's a little more emotional then we allowed to see. Happily his tendencies to become a gunslinger can be controlled by Parcells until Romo mature enough to understand he cannot win the game on every single throw. Sometimes the slow and methodical way he moves his team down the field is the best for him and his team. But I sure don't mind Romo emulating Favre in running down the field to his WRs, etc., to congratulate them on a good play. The QB leads the offense and Romo's excitement is part of him and will drive the rest of the offense to perform even better. Maybe it will continue rub off on the defense with a few corrections in their play.

he sees to become a gunslinger hope

This is Bulger's career stat sheet so far, a couple of nice years knocking on the door of 4,000 yards. He's been one of the better quarterbacks in the league for the last 3 seasons, just doesn't get much hype or pub.

I think there are some similarities except, particularly this year, Bulger is Bledsoe esque back there. He doesn't move at all in the pocket. I like Romo's ability to get out, and still look off receivers on the run.

Romo appears tougher than Bulger (who is a bit fragile) and Romo is much more intense than bulger (more similar to farve in that respect).

I would break it down like this:

Physical ability (arm strength, manuverability) - more like Hasselback.

Mental ability (ability to read a defense, manage the game) - more like Drew Brees.

Intensity - very similar to Farve...almost erie how similar the two are.

I agree. He plays with way more passion than Bulger or even Hasselbeck in my opinion, very reminiscent(sp?) of Favre.

Great post, I think you nailed it. He plays much tougher and with more passion than any qb ive seen in a long time, aside from Favre.

Great post, Wood, but I'd add one more category: pocket presence.

Watching the Feagles Sunday, it was uncanny how much Garcia looked like Romo moving around in the pocket, buying time and avoiding sacks.

I don't think Bulger is fragile. The poor guy had to endure years in Martz offense, where throwing the ball away and checking down were regarded as ***** moves. You're gonna get your butt kicked in that scenario.

After watching him some this year especially when they played the Panthers he looks to me like a younger Bledsoe in regards to getting sacked. He can't get out of the way, and really doesn't seem to care.

Maybe. I haven't seen him much this year. I just don't think he's fragile.

He doesnt remind me of anyone. Romo IS ROMO and that's that. Bulger is a joke, He's not clutch at all, He's a average Qb at best. And The only thing He has in common with Brees is His height. Other than that Romo has WAAAY more potential.
