The signing of Kyle Kosier might not be "sexy", but the more I look at it, the more I like it... worst case scenario, you've got a guy who can literally play any position on the line except center...
Speaking of center, I read on one of these message boards earlier today a report that Al Johnson has put on some weight... that encouraged me greatly; Johnson has always had good mobility, and Parcells likes that in a lineman, but as was often noted in this forum during the regular season, he just got pushed back off the line way too often, because he wasn't strong enough...
By season's end, I was pretty down on Johnson, because I thought he should have bulked up that previous offseason... but it has recently occurred to me that it might be that Johnson couldn't put in the work he needed in the weight room, as he was too busy rehabbing his knee... so maybe this offseason, we'll see him get the strength he so badly needs to be successful in the NFL... I'm inclined to believe that this is the reason the Cowboys haven't really made a push for a veteran center (I wouldn't be upset at all if they do before it's all said and done, though)... I'm thinking that the Boys will go with Johnson and Gurode again next year, and that thought doesn't fill me with quite the same dread that it did a day or two ago...
I also really like the Akin Ayodele signing, he was one I've been looking at practically since the end of the season... I've read that he might be looked at as both an OLB and an ILB... he'd be a liability in coverage, but he'll almost certainly come off the field on obvious passing downs, and he is pretty good against the run... he's not particularly fast by Parcells' standards for LBs, but he has some quickness, and is a physical presence... best of all, he's well under 30 (so is Kosier)...
Right now, the most important signing the Cowboys could announce would be Adam Vinatieri... if it costs 3 million to sign him, pay the man...
Believe me when I say I never, ever expected to say anything like "pay a kicker 3 million", LOL...
I wasn't real excited when I heard the Cowboys were interested in Ryan Hannam, they need a blocking TE and he seemed awfully small for that role... the first scouting report I read online said much the same thing, he was more of a receiving TE than a blocking TE, and frankly, his stats for a so-called receiving TE weren't that hot, a loooong way from Jason Witten's...
But yesterday, I ran across an article on one of these boards, reposting an article from a Seattle-area newspaper, talking about how Hannam was indeed the Seahawks' blocking TE, and he was apparently pretty good at it... he also seemed to be a bit of a fan favorite...
With Dan Campbell out the door, a blocking TE would come in handy, and I don't think Hannam would break the bank... he might be a solid role player (I think Jerald Sowell would be one too, if the rumors are true)...
I've heard the Boys may be bringing in Mike Williams to interview for the RT job... this news kind of surprises me, big Mike wouldn't seem to me to be the kind of player Parcells would waste his time with (and I'm a Longhorns fan)... he has been quite the bust up in Buffalo, largely because he never could seem to get into shape... this is a problem he also had in college...
But maybe Parcells is the guy to light a fire under his butt... if you could get Williams down to 340, he might just be able to play RT...
I've also heard the Boys might be bringing in OG Steve Neal for a look-see... if that's the case, I'd say it's all but certain that Larry Allen is history (I have mixed feelings about that)... but I kinda like Neal, I remember another former college wrestling champion who went on to have a good, solid NFL career for the Steelers, guy by the name of Carlton Haselrig... as you might expect from a former wrestler, Neal knows how to gain leverage...
Right now, it looks like the only FS the Boys really have any interest in is Marcus Coleman... I could live with him, though there are other options out there I'd like better, if the Cowboys draft a FS early on this year... Coleman would the short term answer, and a mentor for the rookie... again, this wouldn't be a sexy deal, but it would be a decent addition...
Apparently, Eric Moulds has once again asked the Bills to release him, so that he can find work elsewhere... if he hits the open market, I hope the Boys take a look at him, he'd be another aging vet who could help the Boys greatly for a year or two... then, draft a WR on the first day... obviously, this is a clear indication where I stand on signing Terrell Owens...
OK, I think that covers about everything for now...
