Mods: I'm putting this in the FanZone because it also contains info on Ezekiel Elliott, Todd Gurley, etc.

Just how good is the 2017 draft’s heralded class of running backs? A scout shares four years of RB draft grades to show where Fournette, Cook, Mixon, Kamara and McCaffrey fall in comparison to Zeke Elliott, Todd Gurley and the rest of the recent top RB prospects

We’ve heard this is a historic running back class, with as many as four players (Dalvin Cook, Leonard Fournette, Alvin Kamara and Christian McCaffrey) being discussed as first-round possibilities and a fifth (Joe Mixon) who would be in the mix if not for off-field baggage. But how good is the 2017 crop really? Have RB stocks been inflated because of an otherwise so-so year for offensive prospects? Are they getting a boost because of the first-year success of Ezekiel Elliott in Dallas and (before a sophomore slump) Todd Gurley for the Rams, causing the first-round running back to come back into vogue?

So we at The College Column performed an experiment: I asked an evaluator from an NFL team to check his final grades on recent top running back prospects, dating back to 2014, and then factor in the 2017 class. (Confession: This is not my idea. Robert Klemko conducted this exercise two years ago with quarterbacks, when Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston were the top QB prospects.)

Here, then, is Team X's top 15 running back prospects since 2014:

1. Ezekiel Elliott, Ohio State (2016)
2. Leonard Fournette, LSU (2017)
3. Dalvin Cook, Florida State (2017)

4. Todd Gurley, Georgia (2015)

It seems like si would be legit, but I'm often skeptical of the anonymous scout.

I remember reading how much of a reach Zeke was at 4, and that he would've been the 3rd best RB in this upcoming draft. A lot of people didn't think he was a better prospect than Gurley coming out either. Can't remember if that was here or on another forum, but good times.

Wasn't Gurley downgraded some because of injury, though?
Yeah, he was some. Still went top 10 though.

It goes back to the measurables. Gurley was a little faster than Elliott and just as big, I believe. People just love a size/speed combo (although Zeke has quite the size/speed combo himself).

What I liked so much about Ezekiel is pretty much the intangibles. He doesn't shy away from contact, at all. Not one bit. In fact, he looks to set the tone and finish his runs by delivering (not taking) a blow. I routinely noticed defenses playing against him at Ohio State, shying away from him in the second half of games. He has terrific vision, balance, and just pure run instincts. He is an alpha dog on the field and his offense always looked different with him in and with him out at OSU.

Gurley had some of that at Georgia. His balance was good and his run instincts were good. However, I saw him miss cut backs and lanes that he should have seen. Despite his size, he didn't really dole out punishment like Zeke... he mainly broke tackles. His pass blocking was way behind Elliott as well. Gurley just seemed to lack a few things that make RB's truly great. Plus, his offense ran just the same with him in or him out.

I could say the same thing about Fornette as well, except he does hand out some punishment too.

Elliott was the only back that I was pretty much certain he would be a great one... and that was before Dallas drafted him so there was no bias there.

Surprised to see no one talking about d'onta foreman from Texas for this years draft.

Not for the Cowboys to draft. In general, compared to other rb prospects.

The topic is about great RB prospects over the past several years.
