New York (CNN) -- Lil' Wayne was sentenced Monday to a year in prison.

The rapper, whose legal name is Dwayne Carter, pleaded guilty in October to felony gun charges as part of a deal with prosecutors.

The charges stem from his arrest in 2007 outside New York City's Beacon Theater. According to police, Carter had a .40-caliber pistol on his tour bus. His attorney said it belonged to someone else.

His sentencing was delayed twice -- first so he could get dental work done, including removal of his diamond-studded braces, then because of a fire at a Manhattan courthouse.

At Manhattan Supreme Court on Monday, the room was packed with onlookers, while more people crowded outside.

Carter was offered the chance to make a statement but declined, shaking his head.

His attorney requested that Carter have protective custody while he is incarcerated. The attorney also requested medical attention because of his recent dental surgery.

As Carter was leaving the courtroom, a fan said to him, "Keep your head up, Weezy," using the rapper's nickname.

Another man wore a T-shirt that said "Free Weezy."

Carter also faces felony drug possession and weapons charges in Arizona.

Lil' Wayne is a multiplatinum-selling and Grammy-winning rap artist. His hits include "The Block is Hot" and "Lollipop." His album "Tha Carter III" was the top selling disc of 2008. His latest album, "Rebirth," was released last month.

From what I understand he's deep into drugs. His bus got pulled over with a ton of them plus a firearm.

Imagine how many records he's gonna pump out when he gets out of there.

I saw a video post his arrest at a concert where he was expecting one of the guys in his entourage to take the fall. It didn't happen. It sucks for him. He'll be back even popular, I agree.

He did a marathon of videos before turning himself in. I think somewhere between 7-10.

You can only imagine how many songs he did or plan to release.

He's got a few songs I like. I'm sure he did. I just wish Tupac had met the same fate before Suge killed him.

This. But i disagree with the first part, Lil' Wayne is the leader of the "new" hip hop, alot of this stuff people have to listen to nowadays is pretty bad. What happened to 90's and 80's hip hop?:nervous:

This is from Bun B who is a friend of Lil' Wayne:

"I feel bad, because I don't think anything like this has happened in music since Elvis got drafted into the Army.

Let's just keep it real: Lil' Wayne is not just the biggest rapper, Lil Wayne is the biggest pop star right now. Maybe Susan Boyle is on his level. But when you talk about music, nine times out of 10, Lil Wayne's name is gonna come into the conversation. I feel bad for any brother or any sister that's gotta go to jail. I feel especially bad for a person like Lil Wayne who's really riding the wave right now. But he don't have a lot of time. He's doing it on the Island. As wild and as ill as the Island is, I think at the same time, he'll be all right. When you in that state jail and you dealing with those lifers, you got a lot of other issues at hand."

I guess I'm that 1 out of 10. Reading this article is the first time I've ever even thought of Lil' Wayne...

The last dot dot dot in this sentence will be the last...
