0526_gregellis200.jpgGreg Ellis is really one of the good guys, despite what many fans think about his nearly annual contract squabbles.
The now former Dallas Cowboys linebacker is, as Jerry Jones put it last week, "a real gentleman."
It's true. Really.
In covering the Cowboys we come across all kinds of personalities in the locker room.
There are the players like Tank Johnson and Terrell Owens, guys who are rude and self-absorbed.
Then there are guys like Greg Ellis, who are considerate, accountable, friendly and down-right down-to-earth.
We all know about Ellis' contract disputes in recent years, but let's look at it this way: Instead of looking at him as a football player, look at him as an accountant. And instead of being 33, how about 63.
So if you were a 63-year-old accountant and your boss came to you and said: "Hey Greg you've done a great job for us and we think you are still a very good accountant, but we've got this 30-year-old guy and we want him to take your job -- although we're not really sure he can do it better than you -- and we want you to take a big pay cut, too." What would you do?
I don't think any of us would like that. But unlike most of us, Ellis can't simply quit and get another job, he's under contract. His only recourse is to try to negotiate with his boss, Jerry Jones.
Ellis is a smart guy, he knows the career of NFL players are short (Here's a great story Ted Madden did a couple months ago about Ellis' post-NFL life).
Guys like DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer have an enormous amount of respect for Ellis and have talked about the realities of the NFL in which after 11-years a good-guy has to move on.
There are 31 NFL teams that would be lucky to have Greg Ellis.
