Running back Duke Johnson sees himself as a fit for the Dallas Cowboys.
The Hurricanes' all-time leading rusher made an appearance on NFL Network's "NFL AM" this week and was asked which NFL team he's hoping to get drafted by. Johnson singled out the Cowboys as his team of choice because of their running scheme.
“In college, we ran the same outside zone scheme, so I’m kind of familiar with it,” Johnson said. “I can run it, basically, in my sleep. I ran it so much in high school and I also ran it a lot in college. I think that system fits me well.”
With the Cowboys losing the NFL's leading rusher in DeMarco Murray this offseason, they're in search of running back support to help fill his void. Even with the addition of Darren McFadden, there's still another spot open in the Cowboys backfield.
Is Johnson on the radar?

He looks too small like randle so I dont think we should look at him.

I like him, but the fact that he looks like a 'committee back' lowers his value for me.

If I'm using a top 3 draft pick on a running back, I want 'the guy' and not 'a guy'.

I like him, too. I like a lot of these second-tier backs quite a bit. I'd be ok with him as a backup option. Think he'd fit in well, and you have to respect that productivity.

What's it going to be then, eh?

First I have heard anywhere that Dallas worked him out. Now I am a little intrigued.

But then again, it is Rapoport.

His injury history worries me, but he out produced a lot of really good players at Miami. Good to know we have some interest. He is one of the more natural runners

He's a guy that's really grown on me as we've gotten closer to the draft.

Me too. Almost seems like one of the cleaner prospects

Yeah. He's got that feel about him where, three years from now, people are going to look back at his early NFL career and his college production and wonder how the heck he ended up a third rounder in the first place. I realize he has to prove that size isn't an issue, and he'll have to pass protect, but I can see him making the adjustment to the pros like it's no big deal.

I like him ,even Murray had multiple injuries in college but he was drafted in the 3rd rd and bulked up and became a tougher runner,DJ has way better vision than Murray and a perfect fit for our offense.

I have liked him as well but did not think Dallas had any contact or interest in him so I just wrote my interest off as wasted hope lol.

I think if they can not get Gurley or Gordon, maybe even Coleman then Duke could be in play.

I like the player and if they choose to go with the platoon approach, he would be an excellent fit.

The kid is explosive and has the best hands in the draft RB wise!

Our blocking scheme was the reason I was hoping he was on our short list.

"Best outside zone back in this draft and it's not close. I just wish he was a little more willing as a blocker." - NFC running back coach

Bottom Line
One of the most explosive runners in college football during his time at Miami, Johnson doesn't need much of a crease to make defenses pay. His explosive quickness and elusiveness should help him adapt quickly to NFL speed. His feel and courage as a one-cut runner should earn him instant playing time. Johnson's lack of pass-protection skills and concerns about his durability could force him into a committee situation. He's perfectly suited for a role as a zone-scheme back.
