Re-sign Rolando McClain

I know many people soured on McClain in year two; the suspension and the up and down play, but I would strongly suggest that he should be re-signed to another one year deal before free agency begins.

McClain hasn't had a full offseason with us mainly due to health concerns, but going into year three, I believe he is healthy, at least I haven't heard of any necessary surgeries for him.

His fitment in this defense is going to be better in his third season and he is only 26. Signing him won't break the bank, and it will allow us to focus resources else where, without having to try to find another player who may or may not fit. Let's not create more holes where we don't have to.

It felt it was disappointing when we weren't able to retain Durant and Carter last year when I felt together they would produce a strong linebacker corps. Well both Durant and Carter (Durant already, Carter is on the way) are available this offseason and should prove to be much cheaper than we would have originally signed them for.

Sean Lee
Rolando McClain
Anthony Hitchens
Bruce Carter
Justin Durant
Damien Wilson

That is a great and surprisingly affordable linebacker corps to me.

You can probably get Bruce Carter for about 2 to 2.5 million per year. He has 5 interceptions for us a year ago, and his absence was a big reason why we were not able to get more turnovers. Perhaps he burned his bridges here with the coaches, but I'd like to see him back. He always had potential, and certainly flashed it at times. I would love to see him playing the strong side with Lee and McClain next to him.

Justin Durant is 30 and we could probably get him for about a million per year. Good solid veteran depth.

I really don't want anything to do with McClain. Don't like his attitude and we should move on. And moving on means NOT bringing back Durant and Carter.

Vincent Rey would be a very good pickup for ILB.
Scooby Wright ILB in the 4th

Add those guys to what we have and we should be good to go.

not sure why but I continue to like Rolando, remain loyal to him and want him on our team. I think the issues we had on dfense last season had a lot to do with missing scandrick as well as having an awful offense that couldn't stay on the field.

I was a huge fan of Rolando McClain but this year he didn't play nspired. Or at least that's how I viewed it. He looked nonchalant out there, going through the motions if you will. He's too talented to play like that. Say what you want about Lee and his glass body but he plays 100% every single snap. That's What We need.

I've been a big supporter of Ro too. I still am. I say we give him another year.

I don't think he's straight in the head, but he has undeniable talent. He's a blue chipper if he can get his head on straight.

And, as has been stated, he STILL hasn't had a full training camp and a full year with the team (of course, by his own doing).

If he's able to stay clean, come to training camp and do all that's expected of him, you give him another chance because ...
1.) he'll come cheap (no one else is going to put up with him) and
2.) if he's on his game, he's one of the best in the business. His upside is greater than most of our defensive players.

However, if he has a subpar year or gets himself suspended again, as much as I've been a supporter of his, I'd be ready to cut him loose.

Prove me right this year, Ro.

That's exactly right.

Someone mentioned that this appears to be living in the past, I really don't see it that way.

I think you look for elements of our team that worked well in the past, yet we weren't able to keep up with them due to cost. Most people wanted Murray to stay last year, and I was not, but I certainly think he could still help our team at the right price.

I think Carter and Durant have something to provide for this team that most players do not. They've played in the system, played for Marinelli, and know exactly what they need to do. There is no learning curve or gestation period that you normally have with free agents from other teams.

To young, to talented, to not bring back if he is willing to play for an incentive laden deal.

I'm a huge fan of McClain when he is playing at 100% and fit.

His attitude and lack of commitment mean that he only manages a handful of games where he is at those levels though. If there is better out there then I'd be ready to move on.

IMO.....He's probably somewhere contemplating whether he wants to play football or not.

Just a gut feeling.

I'm split on the guy.

1. When focused, he is in the top half of MLB in the league.
2. Lazy at times. Doesn't like to practice IIRC
3. Beast against the run, and while not a great pass defender, seems to come up with some nice INTs
4. Suspensions. Got whacked twice last year by NFL. First was no pay, then docked games. Can we depend on him, or do we draft/sign his future replacement as well?
5. Should be a cheap re-signing. High reward, low risk. Still a young dude.
6. Tools are there. Toolbox comes and goes.

I'm leaning towards moving Hitchens to MLB, resigning Durant for Depth and drafting Myles Jack

The German LB will be starting at SAM by week 6. Mark it down

If they can resign him to something like last season, then fine, but they need to draft a player to push him or outright replace him.

I agree. It's a shame that Lee can't stay healthy because he's one of those rare guys who always gives it his all no matter what the circumstances.

I wouldn't mind Hardy and RoMc back if it was on cheap 1-year deals where it wouldn't hurt us if we cut them at any time. The focus now should be the future. We have two young DEs with a lot of potential (Gregory, Lawrence). I don't let Hardy slow any of their progress. But he could be useful on a 1-year deal while Gregory figures things out. Same goes with RoMc. I'd like to see what Hitchens can do. Now, if we sign a LB or DE early, then we should choose cheap young talent over veteran headcases.

Sorry, I'd rather have a MLB that I know is going to show up everyday to work and not have to be coddled.

Those guys are cancers, move on. McClain was never anything more than a cheap stopgap, time to draft a cornerstone player and this draft has a handful of impact LBs that we can have our pick of.

Oh, it wasn't just year too. He all but disappeared the final months of year one as well - when he was needed.

If we draft Miles Jack, he'll be the new MLB. We aren't going to take a guy that high and put him at the SAM where he's not even on the field that much.
We've had McClain for two years now, and he still hasn't proven that he wants to play football. He doesn't hurt us on D, but his attitude just isn't there. This past year, he didn't even want to hit anyone hard, and he didn't take on blocks very well. Unless he was injured and only the team knew it, it's time to move on. We need a MLB who has fire in the belly and wants to knock the crap out of RBs, even if that guy isn't quite as talented as Ro. Then find a SS like that for the secondary, and this defense will start to follow those guys and Lee.
