More and more it becomes evident that to resign Dez Bryant, they're going to have to break open the bank.

He'll want more money than Percy Harvin got, and he'll get less than Megatron.

That's a range between 10 million a year and 16 million a year.

Based on his production, I'm sure his agent will try to make the case for the full 16 million that Megatron and Fitzgerald get. With that being said, I think you need to remember the growing pains included with Dez, the lack of consistency, and the potential question mark that is still hovering above him as to whether he will eventually become a consummate all-pro player who you can rely on game in and game out.

I'd suggest 13 or 14 million a year, and after that I think you're pushing it a bit. Might end up having to trade him if it comes down to it.

Tyron Smith on the other hand, I think you pay him whatever it takes.

Agreed- Dez is my favorite player, but we shouldn't mortgage our teams future on a WR. Granted he is one of the best WR in the league he has had some back issues. Pay Tyron all the money in the world and call it a day.

the only reason I would take Evens at 16 is if Donald is gone would be to become the future #1 and deal Bryant to another team. didn't want to include Evens in the draft discussions but now that the topic hit CZ I will put this out there. I expect over 100 responses to this topic by the days end. lol

What if Mike Evans if available at #16? They could replace Dez with Evans and use the 10M to 16M on defensive free agents and let Dez walk.

You know what at first I was going to say how much I disagreed with your idea, but by the time I started to write my response, it made too much sense, though I would trade Dez, not let him walk, and as you said use that money on some quality defensive free agents, combined with the picks you get for Dez Bryant.

I just can't get on the same page with paying a WR that much money.

Love Dez. Don't love the idea of giving him a long-term deal with what might be a short-term back. He's the face of the offensive franchise going forward, though. Not sure what to do with him, honestly. You can't let him walk. I'm hoping for something like the deal Witten got that matches high annual salaries but doesn't absolutely cripple the team if we have to eat a year or three.

WR usually take a while to develop. It would be the rare WR who could simply come in and do what Dez can do now. Big drop off.

I don't think Evans will make it to #16, but if he did he would most likely be the BPA by far and he's a safe pick, IMO.

The obvious downside is that free agency would basically be over for 2014 by the time of the draft. You would have to use the Dez money on 2015 free agent defensive players. It would however, be fun in 2014 if they kept Dez. The combination of Dez and Evans with Williams as #3 would really put stress on defenses.

Are the Cowboys really a legit contender in 2014 anyway? IMO, the Cowboys best chance is to build to peak in 2015.

I think you already make moves to get some defensive help regardless of what happens in the draft.

I think you sign Henry Melton and look for a guy who could replace Ware/Spencer. Then in the draft you look for another defensive tackle and defensive end.

I think you do this regardless of how things shake out, but looking further you still have some veteran players who are always available after June.

As for keeping Dez Bryant through 2014, I think you could still franchise him in 2015 with the idea of trading him.

A good team doesn't let special players go.

Dez is a special player who appears to have gotten over his immaturity.

I don't think that is the case at all. Many teams have built success off of trading expensive players away and building the team through the draft and with cheaper free agents.

Rather than paying Dez 16 million dollars you could get anywhere between two and four stud defensive players.

I guarantee dez will give the cowboys a decent discount. He wants to be here and doesn't want to go anywhere else.

Like who? Like Richard Seymour? That's parting with a guy near the end of his second rookie contract. Like Percy Harvin? That's trading a guy because you are too cheap to pay him.

I just don't see teams building success by trading young talent as you say.
