Just watched the recent episode of Real Sports on HBO. While I abhor Gumbel, it's actually a great show if you ignore his typically inane takes. They recently did a piece on how the national anthem got woven into the fabric of sporting events. I found it really interesting that these flyovers and anthem singing are paid for by the military (not the other way around), serving effectively as marketing and paid patriotism.
