I think many people asked whether or not it was worth drafting a WR in the 3rd round. I think a lot of people would have rather us drafted a defensive player or at least an another offensive linemen. They certainly weren't happy with what we did at tight end.
I think most people would agree that Green Bay doesn't have the greatest offensive line in football. Yet they were really able to put together a really potent offense (without really running the ball either).
When they won the Super Bowl in 2010, they didn't really have a stunning amount of experience at WR, but they did have pedigree down the chart.
Greg Jennings - 2006 2nd round draft pick
James Jones - 2007 3rd round draft pick
Jordy Nelson - 2008 2nd round draft pick
Donald Driver - 1999 7th round draft pick* Didn't really have pedigree, but certainly had experience.
That being said, the Super Bowl Champion Packers went 10-6 in 2010, and their regular season production certainly doesn't jump off the charts. They were 6-10 in 2008. Very similarly to the Cowboys they had a passing attack. Aaron Rodgers had a 93.8 QB Rating.
In 2009 their offense improved a bit, but their defense greatly improved. They went 11-5.
In 2011 they went 15-1, and lost in their first round of the playoffs to the Giants. Similar to our 2007 year.
I have a strong belief that our wide receiver situation can really help carry this team.
Dez Bryant
Miles Austin
Terrance Williams
-------------------
Dwayne Harris
Cole Beasley
Danny Coale
The only receivers of any notable pedigree are Dez and Williams, but I think we've really found some receiver that we can develop into consistent weapons. Especially when you combine them with our tight end situation. I think we saw what happened with Laurent Robinson, and I don't think that had much to do with how good Robinson was (as evidenced in Jacksonville), rather just how open the offense can be with a competent third receiver when Austin and Bryant are often bracketed with safety help.
And like I said the Packers were dominant without having an especially productive running game. I think when you add what we plan to have this year, this offense is going to be extremely potent. I think we have a certain number of weapons on offense it makes playing cover 2 man really difficult. Cover 2 man has been a way a lot of teams have gotten pressure on Romo in the past. You take away Dez and Austin, bring enough pressure to force Witten to stay in, and you've essentially beaten our offense with this offensive line.
I think when you look at the Packers and when you look at the Patriots you really get a picture of what we can do on offense.
I'm excited about what a real 2 tight end package will do for our running game, and our receiving game. I'm excited to see whether improvements in our interior pay dividends. I'll still be very excited if we get Brandon Moore and Tyson Clabo. If both of those two things happen, I would say right off the bat that we're the favorites in the NFC East next year.
