Reasons why we should resign Romo NOW

1. I don't want contract issues hanging over our starting QB's head for ANY portion of the season. QB is the most mentally taxing position in the game, and we should prevent any distraction we can.

2. If Romo has another Pro Bowl year, I think that his market value will be driven up SIGNIFICANTLY. Right now, I would estimate his value to be somewhere in the neighborhood of the deal that Matt Schaub signed this offseason (6 yrs./$48 mil - though I think Romo would command about twice as much as the $7 mil guaranteed that Schaub got). Another great year, I think his average yearly salary could be in the $12 mil range.

3. If we don't sign Romo this offseason and he has another great year, the thought of him being a UFA at the end of the year is nauseating. Having to slap the franchise tag on him, or, even worse, seeing him leave for more money, would be awful.

4. Say we do sign him this offseason, it proves to be a mistake, and we end up cutting him. I really don't think that the signing will harm us much. First, we are still in a position to likely get the best possible QB prospect in next year's draft and begin rebuilding with a new QB. Second, though eating the guaranteed money given to Romo would hurt, I argue that it wouldn't be a huge detriment to the team. Look, if Romo doesn't work out, we will not be in a position to make a serious run for a few years while we attempt to groom a new QB. It will be during those years that the guaranteed money to Romo would be on the books. I don't think the cap hit will be preventing us from being a true contender...the new QB would. Absolute WORST case scenario, the cap hit could hurt our chances to resign Newman (though I think Jerry and Stephen are savvy enough with the cap to keep that from happening).

I just don't see much of a downside to getting this deal done now. Feel free to put me in my place.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Jerry is not letting Romo go anywhere, I can guarantee that.

I see them agreeing to a contract around week 5 or 6 after Romo proves he was no flash in the pan.

JMO though.

I'm with you. Let's do it now. Sure, it's a gamble. But sometimes gambles pay off, and this would be an educated one.

If Romo has a great year, his market value is going to skyrocket. This guy has been here for going on five years now and we know him very well. So let's nut up, trust our scouts and evaluators, and sign him for what could turn out to be a BELOW market value contract right now.

HE chose to sign the short extention...JJ had a multi-year deal on the table. That tells you how Romo views this.

Romo is pretty much gonna cost alot no matter which way it goes. If he is playing at a pro-bowl level, he'll be signed prior to that award anyway. If he's average, you let him set the price on the market next year (holding two first rounders mind you).

I would wait...we could get burned. 3 Stud QB's in the upcoming draft.

If Romo plays that badly, then I think you've got it right...

I wonder if we will try to get something done in the middle of the season; I understand his stock may be at the highest, but then again if the FA thinks the team is going to go far in the postseason they may end up saving since his stock could be even higher. Probably won't happen that way.

I say sign him before the season starts. I have a good feeling that will happen with Jerry all high and jumpy and let us use our picks to boost our offence even more!

Brian Brohm is the 2nd coming of Carson Palmer. Seen him play several times. Not very mobile, but has a cannon, quick release and his accurate.

Very smart too. Football family background.

so what if Romo is not resigned now and plays out of his mind and drives his price up, if we do end up paying more, wouldn't it be worth it as we'd know he'll be the guy for the next 5 years.

What if we sign Romo to a Schaub contract, he plays like crap, and then we have to draft a QB?

Here's the deal: The way Romo ended the season last year made me think the NFL caught up with him a tad. Make him stay in the pocket cause he isn't very tall, etc.

Not saying he won't be great, but I have serious reservations about long-term at the moment.

If I had to pick a qb I would say Brohm as well.

Bobby Petrino ran a pro-style offense and taught him well.

Irvin88, think of this...

If Cleveland has the worst record and we have the 1st overall pick, or at least top two or three picks in next years draft, combined with...

Vick's possible indictment of charges stemming from his dogfighting

or

Vick's HORRID play next year ===

Bobby Petrino can try to make a play for his former boy in Brohm and try to bring him as their qb of the Falcons.

We could end up with another first round pick for the trade of the pick.

I know that is farfetched but I think it could happen; If all that happens it would still depend on how Romo plays..

Totally agree. Gotta gamble in this league.

We've got a good situation here - Romo knows if he signs big and outplays the deal that Jerry will make it right. That's a major advantage. If Romo sucks, well that's how it goes. Based on how he played last season, I firmly believe he can have great success in this league.

The "figured him out once they got film" idea that folks float is idiotic considering that he had more preseason snaps than any QB over the previous 2 years.

Totally depends on how Romo plays this year. If Romo plays well, we can hold hostage some team that needs to move up and take a QB.

If he doesn't play well, then we take Brohm or Henne from Michigan.

pretty much my point. we CAN afford to wait to resign him. I'm sure no one is completely sold on him.

How do you explain the 7 TD's/8 Int's down the stretch ??

Chad Henne? :lmao2: :lmao2:

I will not watch this team if we draft him.

Henne is a system guy, and a terrible one at that IMHO.

Of course we can. (Though I think that this idea, now that I think about it, would give us even more problems resigning Newman - considering the money Romo could command - than the situation I described in my original post.)

The thing is, we can also easily afford to sign him NOW. In doing that, though, we avoid a lot of potential problems/complications of waiting to sign him...not to mention us getting him at a deal that could prove to be well below market value. I just see very few problems with the idea of getting this deal done ASAP.

I would like to see Romo get a long term deal done now. If he pans out and it needs re-done later no problemo. If he tanks then he tanks and we go QB next April.

I would rather pay now and run the risk of getting burned over not paying and watching him kick butt and then leave.
