1. I don't want contract issues hanging over our starting QB's head for ANY portion of the season. QB is the most mentally taxing position in the game, and we should prevent any distraction we can.
2. If Romo has another Pro Bowl year, I think that his market value will be driven up SIGNIFICANTLY. Right now, I would estimate his value to be somewhere in the neighborhood of the deal that Matt Schaub signed this offseason (6 yrs./$48 mil - though I think Romo would command about twice as much as the $7 mil guaranteed that Schaub got). Another great year, I think his average yearly salary could be in the $12 mil range.
3. If we don't sign Romo this offseason and he has another great year, the thought of him being a UFA at the end of the year is nauseating. Having to slap the franchise tag on him, or, even worse, seeing him leave for more money, would be awful.
4. Say we do sign him this offseason, it proves to be a mistake, and we end up cutting him. I really don't think that the signing will harm us much. First, we are still in a position to likely get the best possible QB prospect in next year's draft and begin rebuilding with a new QB. Second, though eating the guaranteed money given to Romo would hurt, I argue that it wouldn't be a huge detriment to the team. Look, if Romo doesn't work out, we will not be in a position to make a serious run for a few years while we attempt to groom a new QB. It will be during those years that the guaranteed money to Romo would be on the books. I don't think the cap hit will be preventing us from being a true contender...the new QB would. Absolute WORST case scenario, the cap hit could hurt our chances to resign Newman (though I think Jerry and Stephen are savvy enough with the cap to keep that from happening).
I just don't see much of a downside to getting this deal done now. Feel free to put me in my place.
