I would've given a heads up because it was good stuff on the Choppy and Greggo show (or whatever it's called), but I was away from the computer. Not many commercials, so lots of solid talk.

It was a few hours ago now, but some notes off the top of my head:

-- First talked about what the draft room is like. Says it's actually very calm in there. Everyone has a job to do and they're usually focused on that. For instance, he was a pro personnel guy, so he gave input on who other teams might be looking at. But most people are busy studying their area.

-- Talked about the (in)famous last-second Roy Williams trade in '02. Jerry had a phone in each hand and finally got the trade done when Minny admitted they weren't taking Roy. They were so happy they got the deal done, they celebrated for a second. Stephen Jones realized how close the time was, and literally dove across a table to hit the speakerphone and get the deal called in with something like five seconds left. The NFL guy who takes the calls warned them they better not ever cut it that close again.

-- Asked if draft rooms every get excitable or emotional, he said not really (see above), but sometimes people get wide-eyed when another team does something they don't expect. When he was at Green Bay, they had Shante Carver as like a sixth rounder. When Jerry took him in the second, Ron Wolf looked at them all very seriously and said, "I sure hope we got it right with that guy."

-- He said it also gets nerve-wracking when you're hoping a prospect falls. Waiting and hoping on Witten was torture, he said. (I wondered why they didn't trade up for him.)

-- As you see the draft unfold, you realize that some teams had players graded almost the same as you. You make a mental note of that for future drafts to keep an eye on them (for instance to trade in front of them).

-- On to our draft, he thinks we'll go WR, DE, or LB with our first pick. Thinks we'll wait till later on the safety. He said we like McBath a lot and seemed to think we might take him at 69.

-- A caller asked about a huge nosetackle, and he said from the people he's talked to out there (VR), he thinks we really do like the backups already on the team. Maybe Wade really does like Siavii that much... Or maybe they're just being quiet. BTW, for Bob and others, he said he's asked some personnel people he knows around the league about Brace, and some absolutely love him, while others are meh.

-- A caller asked about getting a new left tackle, and he said he forgot to say earlier he thinks they'd love it if Max Unger fell that far. First time I've really heard that we might like him a lot.

-- Another caller asks about Harvin. Broaddus says there's a great chance he'll be there at 51 -- tons of teams simply want nothing to do with drug issues. It's not worth it for a guy to enter the league already in the program. Can't imagine we'd be interested if we took Desean Jackson off our board, and he never failed a drug test.

-- Talked about special teams being important and how Bill always asked how many plays this guy could give you a game. Mentioned Clay Matthews as a great special team player. Thinks Belichick and Pioli will be looking at him hard.

Dude... your recaps suck... ;)

Seriously... good work...

Thanks for the recap C-Lab! How tuned in is Broaddus these days, are these the same scouts from when he was here?

I love the interest in Unger. His versatility must be what is so attractive to Dallas (2 time conference honoree at OT and two time conference selection at C), but the guy is a play to the whistle battler and in-your-face leader, its his intangibles that I love. But if Jerry is interested in WR with the 51st, then no way Unger falls out of the 2nd.

which is terrible. Ratliff could be our Richard Seymour but instead he's gonna be our undersized nosetackle. Wade is such a "defensive genius" yet his defenses have never won anything.
Wow.

I am completely baffled by people that think Ratliff in the middle is a bad thing. The guy was arguably the best NT in the league last year, and you want him to switch positions just because he doesn't fit your idea of what a NT's size dimensions should be? Wade has plenty of things you can bash him for. Ratliff in the middle is certainly not one of them.

Give me a break. The results speak for themselves.

Oh yeah...and thanks, Choc. :)

Amen! The contingent that insists on moving Rat (a pro bowler) is insane, there are other areas that require real attention, e.g. ILB, FB, backup center/guard, nickel LB, backup OLB, S, PR, etc.

Ron Brace is not the answer to all ills.

A couple of opinions,

* Assuming Harvin is off our draft board (and several other teams') and Robiskie consequently goes a bit higher than expected, I'd rather wait to draft a WR in Round 3 or 4. (Guys like M Thomas, Wallace, D Williams, etc.)

* I could see us going DE if a guy like Gilbert is there. He'd be a good fit in Wade's 34. The other option could be the Moala (sp?) - the guy from USC - in Round 2. We've shown interest in both of these guys. I think D Scott is more likely a 3rd or 4th rounder, IMO.

* As for LBs, other than Freeman and Sidbury who are projected by many as Round 2 picks, I'm not sure who else we're interested in Round 2 at the LB position. English may fall, I suppose. I think Beckwith is not seen more as a Round 3 type. Personally, I really like Veikune, but he can probably be drafted in Round 3 or early Round 4. We haven't really shown interest in Kruger, and he's a Round 2/early Round 3 type as well. I guys like Brinkley are also late Round 3/early Round 4 types.

* But I guess the Round 2 LB list would include Freeman, Sidbury, and English - assuming someone else doesn't slip. And we've shown interest in all 3 of these guys.

They were both ***? picks to me at the time.

Ahh...college. :laugh1:

Allen was very highly rated, many said had he went to USC or Michigan he'd have been a top-10 pick

Most people bang on the Carver pick, but he was rated by almost every draft guide/expert as a late 1st or early 2nd rd pick. Almost nobody remembers he had an excellent career at Arizona St, and got double digit sacks EVERY season there.

The point is a real expert, Ron Wolf, had him rated a 6th rounder and we took him in the first. That is a disparity of evaluation rarely seen. Talk about reaching for a need position!

I remember reading Buschbaum's analysis of Carver and it was decent but it by no means indicated the guy was a first rounder. He might have been a decent player if not for his drinking problem.

He's suppose to be a C/G in the nfl. I guess the LT question just reminded him of Unger, I don't think he meant that they like him as a LT. (At least I hope not)

That's doubtful, but a player that can play (theoretically) any line position is invaluable.

True.

Kiper had Carver ranked as the top DE, I believe. Either that or second.

I would be happy to get a lineman like Unger at 51.

That's my hope, that Dallas can steal a versatile, competitive, first-round talent at 51 ... preferrably someone that blocks or tackles.

Recap schmeecap...

Here's the actual audio.

Here's Bryan Broaddus talking Cowboys and NFL Draft on ESPN Radio with Greg and Choppy...

Broaddus on ESPN Radio

That Joey Galloway trade was dreadful. The guy comes out and the first pass that goes his way winds up with him tearing up his knee and missing the entire season.

I will watch the entire thing on Saturday and probably the entire thing on Sunday too.

Jerry came out today and said the Cowboys will not be trading up into the first round by the way.

That's good insight into how the 'draft war room' works.

Great job on the recap CL.

I didn't even know these guys were doing this show.
