Goose on Norm…

(caller) Why take a RB in the 1st round? Shouldn’t we find another pass rusher and follow the Giants?

Marion Barber ran out of gas in the 2nd half in his playoff start last year. You have to have two running backs in this league these days. With Julius Jones leaving, they have to find someone else. They don’t have to take one in the 1st round, but the talent drops off dramatically after round 4 … so they need to take a RB by the 4th round. But I really think Dallas needs to get younger at WR and draft someone who is a #2 WR now but has the potential to grow into a #1. Last year Dallas should have stayed put and drafted Dewayne Bowe. If you want to make Tony Romo a better QB you have to surround him with weapons the way they did with Aikman. They have to take a WR with one of those two first round picks.

This is a myth.

Goose sounded like an idiot today.

Tampa Bay taking a RB in the first round? Does he realize that they have Dunn, Grahman, Williams, and Michael Bennett. The only position they need LESS than RB is QB.

Marion Barber running out of gas in the second half? Did he actually watch the game. Did he notice that it was the OL that failed not Barber. The second half Romo never could even set his back foot to throw, he was running for his life all day. And Barber had no running lanes all day.

We have to draft a WR in round 1? And he just said that he expects guys he views as second rounders to be the ones being drafted around pick #25, and he is advocating us doing that as well?

He did not say what he would personally do, but what they might do. Go to a Tampa board--they sure sound very much like this board regarding RB. They may go as early as Rd1 but more likely Rd2 or 3. Williams must be worse off than we know?

I dont care what anyone says I dont believe barber ran out of gas last year. I believe the offensive line was awful in the third qtr and adams, columbo and gurode looked like they were out of synch.

Either way, I prefer another power back opposed to the speed demon. If we find a guy who can take the ball a bunch and also run with power it is going to be pretty tough to deal with our team in the 4th qtr.

He didn't run out of gas last year, but he did run out of gas in the second half of the playoff game.

To me, it's not a big deal even if he did run out of gas at some point...bottom line is he never carried the load all year, which means not in practice either. Anyone would run out of gas because he hadn't been conditioned to that.

If he prepares to carry the load, he'll do it.

Just as a comparison, Emmitt always carried the load, but he had plenty of games much worse than the Giants playoff game.

I think it was play calling. Dallas kept trying to do the things that worked in the first half that NY adjusted to. Dallas was constantly in 2nd and third and long because NY was keying on Barber on first down. Play action would have worked.

Well, to be fair, he did have 16 carries at half. Average for most backs in the NFL is like 20-22, something like that. It's interesting, at the start of the
3rd quarter, Barber had 7 total rushes for for 24 yards. That's 3.42 yards, which is not great but it is not bad either. That's with 8 men in the box. In the 4th quarter he had 4 carries for 4 total yards but what's interesting about that is that the Cowboys ran him on 1st down three times and never really went back to him. They threw the ball. On the very last drive we had, they threw to him for 9 yards, ran him for a loss of 1 and he didn't really see the ball again. Sometimes I wonder if he was really gased or if we just didn't do a good job of play calling there. No question that he was not the same player he was in the first half but I don't know if he actually was spent or not. He looked very tired but then, so did Earl after his first carry in any game I ever watched.

I guess two things that strike me about that. One, we didn't do a very good job of using Barber in the second half and two, Barber was very succesful. Maybe we don't need a speed back to go with Barber to share the load. Maybe we just need another back that can do the same things Barber can do. If we could have brought a fresh back in with simular skills, I don't believe they could have stopped him. JMO.
