Bills already lost Shaq Lawson to shoulder surgery. Now Reggie Ragland, who many fans wanted, blows his knee out.

Dang, what would Jerry say...his "serendipity" thing.....I am not trying to be "trite" here, but that is the way of the NFL.

It'll still have been an unnecessary risk.

If another player who was on the board when we took Smith contends for the award *this* year, will you bump the thread too?
Absolutely. If jacks career is over after his first contract and Smith is playing into his 30s will you remember this conversation?

Probably not, but you can remind me.

I fully expect Smith to be a very good player if he gets back on the field. That was never my issue with the pick. My issue was that at 34 there were other very good players available who could give you four full years and didn't carry the injury risk. For a defense that needed to pull two immediate starters from the first two rounds, we pulled zero.

but what if Jack plays at a pro-bowl level for 3/4 years and Smith either never recovers or recovers but really isn't the same player? Or both Jack and Smith turn out to be terrific but Jack has an extra season (rookie year) of production before both of their rookie contracts expire?
I'm surprised that we skipped on Jack when we picked up Leary with a similar condition and he's been great for us.
Certainly anything can happen (Jax and Fowler last year) and I realize we went off of our doctors' guestimations, but I just thought we should've bet on Jack over Smith at that point in the draft. Not sure but Smith might've even been available at our third pick.

yet the Jaylon Smith pick is still hated. When he wins Defensive rookie of the year next year, im going to remember all of those comments.

He can't win rookie of the year next year, he won't be a rookie anymore, unless we cut him and put him on the practice squad. He signed his rookie contract, he's going to be IR or PUP to start with, and the NFL counts being on IR a season.

It happened to Willis McGahee, he wasn't eligible to be Rookie of the year his second year despite not playing his rookie season, unless the NFL has changed that... lord knows they'll change anything at the drop at the drop of a hat.

The NBA should have never let Blake Griffin win Rookie of the Year, now everybody thinks that's how the NFL works too.

It's not so much the injury for me, although that was a huge risk, its that I'm not totally in love with the player. Add to that the other players that were available still....I'm hoping for the best but have extreme skepticism in relation to this pick.

Oh wow, thanks for that. I thought rookie was like Baseball, meaning when you play your first season it is your rookie year. Didnt realize your a rookie whether you play or not. WEll, i retract that statement lol

How does one win Defensive Rookie of the Year in their second year? #i'lltakethatbet

If you do not play at all in the season I believe you are eligible for rookie awards the next season. At least I know in the NBA its like that. That's how Blake Griffin was able to win rookie of the year in his 2nd season.

My bad on this, didnt realize he is considered a rookie this season if he doesnt play. Either way, if this kid ends up being what he was at Notre Dame, and recovers fully. It will look like a stroke of genius by Jones to take the risk. Just my opinion,.

Nope. Not how the NFL works, look up what happened with Willis McGahee, same thing and he wasn't eligible.

I believe it's because the NBA and Baseball have a D-league/farm system, where they can stash players, sorta like a red shirt. Where the NFL does not.

You never know with injuries. Sometimes you can draft an injured player in college, who winds up having a 15 year career. Other times you draft a guy who was never injured in college but gets hurt in his first mini camp and is never the same player.

With the exception of QB, it really shows you can never tie yourselves to players/draft picks. A lot of them will wind up getting injured. Some will regain their form, some will not. While first round picks gets months of debate and cheers, it really shows you just need to be solid all the way up and down of player evaluation.

Oh damn that sucks. That doesn't seem right If you don't play you should still be able to count as a rookie imo.

Well, then he will just have to be named Defensive Player of the Year. :D
