Replacing Sean Lee And Why It's Not All Bad

Nobody is going to feel bad for you in the NFL. Injuries happen, even to superstars. The injury to Sean Lee hurts in so many different ways. With DeMarcus Ware and Jason Hatcher leaving in free agency, he was far and away the most important player on the defense and needed to stay healthy to continue to lead this defense. But now that we know that he is out for the year with a torn ACL, it’s time to figure out how to replace him, as hard as that may be.

In the last few days, there have been dozens of articles written about the loss ofSean Lee and the potential impact that it will have on the Dallas Cowboys defense. But at some point, you have to move on and figure out how to replace Lee. Jason Garrett continually hammers home the cliché that he has a “next man up” approach to injuries. And we often roll our eyes because it’s going to impossible to replace Sean Lee’s play, let alone his leadership on the field. But I believe the Cowboys have prepared for a season without Sean Lee. Given his injury concerns, they knew they may have to play games without their stud linebacker. They spent a fourth round pick on Anthony Hitchens (who many criticized for drafting a backup for Lee so early in the draft) and have three other players on the roster who have experience playing in the middle including Bruce Carter, Justin Durant and DeVonte Holloman. I have continually sang the praises of DeVonte Holloman on this site and still believe he will become a really good player in the NFL and I also believe his best spot in the NFL is at middle linebacker in a 4-3.

And as bad as this sounds, sometimes injuries help launch another players’ career. Look no further than here in Dallas. When Felix Jones missed time in 2011, DeMarco Murray made the most of the opportunity and stabilized the running back position for the team for years to come. When the Cowboys lost Pro-Bowler Anthony Spencer last year, Out of nowhere came George Selvie to replace him and then proceeded to have the best year of his career. I can give numerous examples of this over the years. Don’t under-estimate the young players on this team, especially DeVonte Holloman. I think there is a decent chance that he becomes a stud linebacker for the team this year. I think he has enough potential to be great. Am I over-reacting to a college tape, a few preseason games and the final game of the season? Maybe. But there is so much talent there and I can’t wait to see his development over his career.

Read the rest here, including a scouting report on DeVonte Holloman: http://cover32.com/cowboys/2014/05/29/replacing-sean-lee-and-why-its-not-all-bad/

i agree with your statement, its called life, and its what we make of it, but I think as for myself, im tired of Dallas having these problems and still saying "we lets bank on a guy like Sean Lee to make the season"

There is more to it, I believe that. I think its also time for teams to get other players to practice like they want to be starters and start drafting better players and not just hype from big schools. I have been seeing a big change in the draft that i like. I think teams also have to start setting the pace. I think Dallas needs to re evaluate the talent on the team and say hey "if you want to be a back up, you have to practice to be a starter in this game, if you cant cut it, good bye." Tho that might lead to more players being cut, but id like to see something.

Seriously, can we send this guy to the Eagles? He can sit on the bench for them just fine.

Here's one of the All-22 Shots from the article:
http://cover32.com/cowboys/2014/05/29/replacing-sean-lee-and-why-its-not-all-bad/

This play is designed to be a sweep to the right of your screen. But because Holloman knows McCoy’s tendency is to cut back the running play, he hes

That's a decent play but the article doesn't show this one:

Just one year it would be nice to not have to have someone 'step up' at a critical position.

Actually I have always thought this step up is all BS. There is a reason you are a backup 95% of the time. It is because the starter is clearly a better player.

Wilber should not be there! He should be causing the RB to cut back into Holloman, but he took the wrong angle and lane giving up the outside...

Wilber was getting blocked. Holloman could have turned his head and then adjusted his angle so he wouldn't have run into Wilber.

No, Wilber has to beat that block and do his job! The corner can do it, he can too!! Wilber is behind Holloman, he can see him

Losing your best player on defense and saying it's all good is like saying losing Peyton Manning for a season is fantastic because Brady Quinn is getting a chance to start, in other words it's a ludicrous statement.

Sean Lee has Bob Sanders syndrome, it sucks to see a potential hall of famer have his career wasted by injuries.

Did I say it was all good? I said it's not all bad. I think there's a little difference there.

Everyone beats their block but Wilber, he runs into Holloman!
