Does Chicago want to trade Jay Cutler for the second overall pick?
Posted: 04/06/2015, 12:08pm | Kyle Thele, Digital Editorial at Sun Times Network

The Titans and Jay Cutler have been connected all offseason. Since the Bears quarterback was benched towards the end of last season talks of Cutler being traded to the Titans have been kicked around. Now, there is a new rumor of a trade and it involves the Titans first round pick.

According to a video from Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole, some members of the Bears organization are very interested in Marcus Mariota. Not believing he will fall to Chicago’s 7th pick, Cole reports the team is interested in a trade with Tennessee. In return, the Titans would likely get Cutler and the Bears pick.

I would not do that, were I Tennessee. Cutler is not worth the 1st round pick but it's an interesting offer. Tennessee is really talented, outside of QB. With the 7th pick, they can still add an impact player and have a Vet QB to boot. The contract is big and even though Cutler is as talented as any QB in the NFL, I don't trust him. I'd rather keep the pick and take my future QB in Mariota. JMO

I really think the only thing keeping this from happening is the 1st rounder and maybe some sort of financial incentive to the Titans.
Tennessee has a high 2nd rounder. If Chicago wants to part with Cutler, they should take it.
I know it's unpopular here, but my guess is that Cutler would do pretty well in Tennessee with Whisenhunt.
Great coach for QBs
Strong, young Oline
Very good, young, WRs

Even then, without some finaical help with that Cutler contract, it may not be worth it.

I wouldn't want Cutler with that current contract, period. It's a bad, expensive deal. You don't get better by taking on that kind of water. Just take the pick and be done with it.

I would not give up a first round choice for Cutler at this point. There is absolutely no way.

Though the $126 million number gets a great deal of attention, the only important part of Cutler’s contract is the first three seasons of the deal. This portion contains all of the guaranteed salary in Cutler’s contract and dictates what the Bears, or any team that acquires him, would be required to pay him. The first three seasons of Cutler’s contract are worth a total of $54 million. The Bears have already paid Cutler $22.5 million for the 2014 season. His 2015 salary of $15.5 million is already guaranteed. That means that if Cutler is released, the Bears are responsible for payment of that money.

Cutler’s $16 million in salary in 2016 is currently guaranteed for injury only, meaning if he is hurt and cannot pass a physical when released, he would also collect an additional $16 million. There is a further catch to this guarantee, however. On the third day of the 2015 League Year, which should be March 12th, $10 million of that $16 million becomes fully guaranteed, protecting his salary from any form of release. The remaining $6 million becomes fully guaranteed in 2016.

This article tells me that as of March 12th, the Bears must guarantee $10 million of Cutler's 2016 salary making a trade all but impossible at this point.

No legit number 1 WR there,he would not thrive.

They could draft somebody..have somebody step it up. Don't they have some guy named Washington that is pretty good?

Cutler isn't a bad QB. I remember him carving up the Cowboys a few years back. I think everyone did but I am pretty sure he had a monster game.

Actually there number 1 is Wright and he is not in the mold of the number 1 WR Cutler has had in his career. Not saying this can't happen just pointing out if he goes there he doesn't have a legit WR to throw at. Washington is/was number 3/4 on the depth chart last year.

I am not good with names. Not even Cowboy players. I try but the NFL rosters sure isn't my strong suit.

Thanks.

That's like asking if someone with syphilis would like to trade it for a million dollars. The answer is yes, but good luck finding someone who will complete the deal from the other end.

They have two very good and young WRs in Justin Hunter and Kendall Wright. Wright is already good and Hunter--23yo, 34th pick overall, 6'4 and can fly--would thrive with Cutler.
The problem is that the cost to get him does not match what would make sense to Tennessee.

I agree not saying Wright isn't good just not that legit number one Marshall has been for Cutler most of his career. Hunter is still in wait and see mode. Def talent there though.

Cutler would need to take a pay cut. And nobody likes him.

Wright is no #1 receiver. He's a little better than Terrence Williams at most.

I don't believe in Mariota so I would take this deal if I were Tennesse. If they added Cutler and were able to still grab a talented player at #7 they would be well-positioned for a playoff run this year.

Cutler is similar to Eli Manning in that he has the ability to play-up to those around him, and similarly he will play-down to them as well. Including scheming, coaching, etc;. With the right team he is a top 7 QB, with the wrong team, well, he will lead the league in interceptions.
