Chris Berman has been with ESPN for nearly 40 years, but he’ll retire at the conclusion of the 2016 NFL season, per a report from The Big Lead.

Chris Berman, the longtime ESPN sportscaster who has been with the company since 1979, is leaving the network after next football season, multiple sources tell The Big Lead. Berman is in the final year of his contract, which ends sometime after the 2016-2017 football season.

As TBL notes, Berman will retire rather than leave for a different network. He just turned 61, and he’s been with the company since it was founded. The decision to replace him is not expected to come any time soon. It could go all the way down to the start of the 2017 season.

"No one circles the wagons like the Buffalo Bills"... I hate when he says that crap. I got to admit, I won't miss it If I never hear him say it again.

Yea, no wonder he didn't like the Cowboys. Glad we kicked the crap out of his team 2 times in the big game. The NFC East has not been kind to the Bills.....

I'm a traditionalist so I think it sucks. It reminds me of my youth. However his act has gotten stale and he's awful at play by play for football when he does the 2nd Monday night game.

People hate on him, but this dude was on the first frontier of covering sports on cable television.

"Nobody circles the wagons, like the Buffalo Bills!" ;)

I wonder if all the behind the scenes nonsense that goes on with Berman factors in to this. It could be a situation where the network told him in a nice way "hey we're kind of sick of all this crap, and we aren't going to renew your contract, so out of respect for your many years of service, why don't you announce your retirement and go out like that"
