Door still open for Pacman; not so much for Matt Jones

I caught up with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones in his private suite after the George Strait concert Saturday night. He was celebrating a wildly successful opening night for the new Cowboys Stadium. At least until I told him about the absence of straws. Fans paid $6 for sodas in souvenir cups with lids but didn't get any straws because someone forgot to order them.

But before thatJones talked about the rave reviews he got about the stadium from guests in his suite Saturday night, including Troy Aikman, Jason Witten and former Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson.
Jones was so happy that he volunteered a little Cowboys news regarding his continued interest in cornerback Adam Pacman Jones. The Cowboys owner said nothing is imminent or even in the works toward bringing Pacman back to the Cowboys.

But he acknowledged that it is something he is considering, which rates as big news considering Pacman was cut in January after a nondescript season on the field in 2008 and more controversy off of it in the form of a six-game suspension for fighting his body guard at a Dallas Hotel.

Jones said that Pacman Jones graded out as the team's best cornerback last season. But he says he likes second year cornerbacks Mike Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick and is worried about stopping their progress.

Regarding another NFL player with the last name Jones and off the field issues, Jerry Jones said the Cowboys have no interest in former Arkansas receiver Matt Jones. Matt Jones was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars after failing a drug test and violating the terms of his probation from a previous arrest for felony possession of a control substance.

So, Pacman is still open, but Matt Jones isn't?

Whatever.

Yeah, let's bring back the troublemaker at a position of strength while ignoring the position with all the question marks.

And let's have 'Chariots of Fire' Crayton run our 'Razorback' too.

Congratulations Jerry.

You're the reason this team continues to fail.

And apparently more than enough idiots with that last name too!

I hope neither are here but I see your point. Especially since the drug bag plays a position of weakness on this team as opposed to the gangster who plays a position of relative strength.

Yeah, if the reason for passing on Matt Jones was simply the off-field stuff I'd have no problem.

They're looking to clean up the team's image and don't want to damage it in any way by signing a guy with 'issues'.

But Adam Jones makes Matt Jones look like a choir boy, so that theory is out the window!

Wait a minute ... Pacman graded out as the best corner on the team?????? According to whom? Everything I've heard is about how he had talent but little skill and technique. If he graded out higher than Newman then there must be a curve for being suspended.

Its a no win for Jerry Jones, you either have young fans who scream TO OLD or you have fans that dont get football at all, "Why didnt he take BUSH over Williams"? Come on.

1) If Jerry wants to go with youth and talent, you gotta see what Miles Austin can bring to the team. We know Matt Jones isnt that superb, but right now Miles has potential.

Whatever we think of Crayton, we know hes solid. So going with Roy Williams, which we are hoping pans out to be our number 1 guy, and potential like Austin and a solid receiver like Crayton, what else do you want to jam in there without blocking Austin.

2) If we are all fans that scream defense wins championships, than yes Jerry is right again, line that defense with talent because its harder to find a good corner compared to a WR. If a CB fails on any play, any given play is 6 points. All a WR has to do is catch the ball and either move the chains or get the TD, if he doesnt get a TD, the team gets another chance, if a CB fails, chances are extremely better its a TD and there are no more chances, your team is down 6 points.

Im not big on the chant Defense Wins Games, but right now i have to have more faith in our defense than our offense and a person like Matt Jones isnt going to be enough of a threat to 1) give a contract to 2) stop Austins or Hurds progress and 3) bother taking over for Crayton. We have enough on WR which really this team might not even be to worried over since we have a Pro Bowl TE and a possibly good TE in the number 2 slot. And with out RB's as they are, those guys need to get the ball as well. So we are spreading the ball around really well as it is.

Would Matt Jones even remotely fit on this team at this point?

Pacman is the pusher, where Matt Jones is the user. So yes, Pac does make him look like a choir boy and neither is talented enough to provoke an acquisition. It just does not make sense and that's why it's insane.

I think Jerry just wanted to stir up some headlines since the new stadium had its first event and he is using as many avenues possible to make last nights event apparent to the mass'. Even if Pacman happens to be that avenue.

Nobody is saying take Matt Jones and go against the cleaning up of this locker room. They're just saying why would you destroy all the work done this offseason for Pacman, where db is strong and Pacman is a hell raiser compared to Matt Jones, who actually plays a position where we have uncertainty.

No, Matt Jones would not fit into this locker room and Jerry on this same day concluded we are in no way interested in Matt Jones. But for some reason Pacman Jones is being considered.

Jerry Jones really isnt pushing the chemistry issue, that was more media speculation. Lets call it what it is, retooling. Now we find out where are our weaknesses and where can we boost ourselves.

The bottom line is winning and if a player can get you there, Jones will go after it, lets face it the fans want it that way too. There would be no problem if Adam Jones had made an interception that put us in the playoffs.

So in honest speaking im all for letting Jerry run his team his way and do what it takes to win. If that means bringing back Adam because hes a good player, do it, but this time give him a Dallas security guard and handler, someone who takes care of adams schedule and make sure he stays out of trouble and have the contract stipulate as much.

Keep in mind that Adam Jones was released for something that happened before he was even a Cowboy and before he was even suspended. He was not even convicted of the charges against him. He was released so that the Cowboys would not be associated with his court drama and allegations. By all accounts of team members, Adam was a totally different player once he joined the team.

Matt Jones on the other hand was busted for drugs and hasn't shown that he is recovered from that yet. He was suspended for violating the drug use program and still has to serve his suspension if any body signs him.

If Adam Jones has a cleared name, I see no problem bringing him back in a reserve role. Keep in mind that we are a Newman injury away from Jenkins and Scandrick starting. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but then that means Mickens or Ball will have to play the slot. Having Pacman is insurance in case that scenario were to play out.

That seems like a weak excuse - at best.

'Potential'? The 'potential' to have caught 18 passes in 3 seasons? That 'potential'?

Matt Jones is 1 year older and coming off a season where he had 65 catches, more than just about the enrtire Cowboys receiving corps as a whole! And that in 12 games!

Last season, he was far and away more 'superb' than anyone the Cowboys are hoping to come through this season. That's fact.

If Austin's the better player and the guy we all hope, his talent will get him on the field. And hopefully, improved health will keep him there. Signing Matt Jones won't hold Austin back if he's good enough. And Crayton is 'solid', but he's not and never will be spectacular. I shudder to think of him as this team's #1 when Roy Williams gets hurt.

This analogy is so poor that I don't feel it's worth comment or rebuttal.

Again, Jones had more ctaches last season that anyone the Cowboys are hoping for - and it wasn't close. I'll take that over hoping for a crew of unprovens with a poor history of injury.

Unless you're going with 4 receivers, I think he would.

And you'd have better insurance against probable injury than you do right now - a lot better!

Someone needs to do their homework.

And we're also an injury away from Parick Crayton as this team's only proven receiver.

Let that sink in for a second...

I guess Jerry hasn't changed...

I bet if TO has a good year in Buffalo and becomes a free agent, he'll be talking about bringing him back too
