Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com reports that Colts coach Tony Dungy is informing coworkers that he has decided to retire.

Per Glazer, Dungy is making the rounds at the team’s complex, saying his good-byes, and informing all concerned that the transition should be smooth for his successor, Jim Caldwell.

Though crazier things that Dungy changing his mind between now and 5:00 p.m. EST have happened, it looks like Dungy is calling it quits.

And he has said in recent interviews that, once he’s done, he’s not coming back.

DUNGY PRESS CONFERENCE COMING AT 5:00 P.M. EST
Posted by Mike Florio on January 12, 2009, 10:20 a.m.

The Colts have announced that a press conference will be held at 5:00 p.m. EST on Monday, presumably to declare the status of coach Tony Dungy.

We say presumably because the one-line press release says only this: “The Indianapolis Colts will hold a press conference today at 5:00 p.m. at the Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center.”

If Dungy retires, assistant head coach Jim Caldwell will become the next head coach.

Last year, the world learned of Dungy’s decision to return in similar fashion, with a late-afternoon press conference. In that case, the team announced that owner Jim Irsay, president and G.M. Bill Polian, Dungy, and Caldwell would attend.

That guy is a class act. I wish him well. I wanted him here as our Coach so bad at one time. We went with some idiot named Switzer instead.

Jim Caldwell has a stipulation in hsi contract to replace Dungy. Their HC is already in place.

Class act is right, he will be missed :(

But he plans on doing a lot of work in the communities, so good for him.

Actually it's not a violation to promote from within. Same as when Jim Mora took over for Holmgren.

I always respected the way he went about his business, going back as far as his turning the Bucs from losers into a respectable franchise. One of a kind guy, best of luck to him.

It doesn't hurt that Caldwell is black.

But, if a team has a transition plan in place, similar to Indy and Seattle, then no, they don't have to adhere to the Rooney rule.

He obviously didn't know that, more interested in crying foul because of the rule.

Hope he's not totally out of public view in retirement.
