That story makes no sense. He wants to quit but we're trying to talk him out of it? If he doesn't want to play, we shouldn't want him to.

And the stories have been that he was hoping we'd cut him so he wouldn't have to repay the $3 mil.

I agree. That is more likely. Make him retire and give back the cash. I bet he ends up playing. Can't imagine being able to give back 3 mil.

I keep hearing 3M, but he received a 5M signing bonus and played 2 years. That should leave 1/3 of 5M that he has not earned or about 1.6M.

I don't get the 3m either, unless there's some sort of penalty for retiring before fulfilling the contract when it comes to signing bonus. Mostly I'd be happy to get his 3.5m base salary off the books.

3 million dollars is a lot of booze...even for him. I think he will show too. His post-retirement lifestyle isn't going to fund itself.

So, Jerry Jones won this standoff.....

There are no "winners" here. I cannot imagine Orton paying back $3M for the "right" to retire, nor do I see the Cowboys getting a player worth having if his head is not into playing.

I imagine they are waiting it out to see if he reports, but even if he does, why would you want a player who does not want to play? And pay him for it?

Honestly, he is the one who decides. There is no way the team comes out on top unless he does something that practically nobody would do.

No, he lost. IF he retires, our backup QB situation went from excellent to very bad.

The backup QB situation does not really change. If his mind is not focused on being the best he can be and preparing just as if he would be starting, what good is he anyways? A "name"?

All that really changes is the general impression that we are "set". Now it just goes back on Weeden's ability.

Not thrilled with it, but I want Orton off the team. No sense keeping someone a Romo injury away that does not want to play and prepare like a good backup should.

If he stays with the team, he'll put in the work as he usually does. He's a professional.

If he was a professional, he would have informed the team long ago about his intentions and not been playing a game with them since the season ended. If he was a professional, he would be putting in the work in the offseason conditioning program to prepare to play. This is not your normal situation with the starting QB coming off of back surgery.

It's one thing to forgo his 3.25m salary for this year, quite another to actually pay back 3m on top of that. I see him showing when he absolutely has to and hoping Dallas cuts him. Getting the full 6.25m back against the cap would be real nice for the team.

There are some excellent points!

Yeah, I don't think he'd pay anything.

Just from a tax perspective it would be a nightmare because I think you can only amend tax filings for 3 years after the deadline. Basically any player who retires after the 3rd year of a contract just pays back all that unaccounted for (in terms of the cap) bonus money and has now paid out of pocket the tax portion of a couple million dollars?

It's guaranteed money. The trade off in retiring is that you're generally forfeiting a hell of a lot more than the amount you've "swindled" out of the team . The team has your rights so you can't just sign another contract for another team......not that any team would want to sign you under those circumstances any way.

I could see there being a process by which teams could reclaim signing bonus money (in situations where a player retires excessively early) but I would seriously doubt that it is the standard. I think the Patriots had to have a hearing (or will have one) to try and recover some of Hernandez's signing bonus.

Comes back and fakes an injury or something.

That's going to suck if Romo's back is an issue.

I don't think Weeden is that terrible. He could do ok here if we needed him for a few games. The guy has experience playing the AFC North.

Dallas is a good situation for him. Good OL and weapons all around.

Honestly, if he's starting, we have to assume a loss for that game. He's a pretty bad QB.

I wouldn't. His problem was protecting the football.

As much as I hate the coaching job hat has been done with Tony Romo you gotta give the Cowboys coaches credit for protecting the football better.

That is Weedens problem. He is a talented passer and if he learns to make smarter decisions with the football he could do well here if we needed him for a stretch.

With the upgrades we've made on the Oline, Weeden should do well.
