I think he shows. If he screws around that will be bad for the Boys. I think Weeden will be serviceable as a backup but I didn't mind having Orton around to give him time to get up to speed. He'll just have to step up if Orton retires.

So Romo has to stay healthy, right?

I keep hearing 3M, but he received a 5M signing bonus and played 2 years. That should leave 1/3 of 5M that he has not earned or about 1.6M.

Perhaps folks are also accounting for his base salary as well? Edit: nevermind, forgot he was restructured last year.

No, he lost. IF he retires, our backup QB situation went from excellent to very bad.

I don't get this line of thinking. It's not like ORton has had a ton of success as a starter, certainly no more than Weeden. Orton was just a guy with a decent arm and some starting experience. Well, guess what? Weeden has that too. I don't care if Orton comes back or not as long as his money comes off the books and he doesn't become another player to get one over on the Cowboys. I can see it now: he retires / is cut, jerry doesn't get his money back, and Orton goes to someplace like back to Denver and gets a SB ring having never played another down.

Would like to know what's in Orton's head, but it's probably not football. I always wonder what sours someone who has been so absorbed and driven to success at a high level. Like every other player, he's been all in since he was a kid; maybe it's just burn-out, but I bet there's a more interesting story there.

I wouldn't. His problem was protecting the football.

As much as I hate the coaching job hat has been done with Tony Romo you gotta give the Cowboys coaches credit for protecting the football better.

That is Weedens problem. He is a talented passer and if he learns to make smarter decisions with the football he could do well here if we needed him for a stretch.

All the more reason to ramp up the running game and emphasize it as the basis of our offense.

Well, Ratliff, and many more, Roy williams, others took JJ's money, so why not orton too....just a different way to look at it.

Anyway, If orton don't want to be here, then let him go. Don't let him get away with getting his way to be released to keep the money. Is there a list, like a Did not report list they can put hime on, suspend him him, so he doesn't get even get any game checks. And plus they can fine him for not reporting, for each day.

I would prefer he gets it in gear and decides to play, better for everyone and the team.

I believe it was Bill Parcells who stated that once you start talking about retirement you pretty much have.

I get the feeling that Rapaport just put together reports and stuff that has happened over the last 6 months that everyone already knows, but packaged it into a speculative article.

Because, you know, Ian Rapaport.

Yep. If his heart is not in the game then he should go ahead and retire. Unlike some I would love it if he wanted to play. Yes he threw a pick that hurt in the philly game but he also went 33 of 51 for 398 yards and 2 TD passes. Many back up are not going to produce as he did. Teams end up going strickly run and rely on defense and when they can't they ended up getting blown out. Orton did give this team a chance with little time to get ready.

If he was a professional, he would have informed the team long ago about his intentions and not been playing a game with them since the season ended. If he was a professional, he would be putting in the work in the offseason conditioning program to prepare to play. This is not your normal situation with the starting QB coming off of back surgery.

He's a utility maximizing individual above all else. He'll look out for #1 first. Just like everyone else would.

He may have told the team which is why Dallas went out and got Weeden and then turned around and got Caleb Hanie. No doubt rumors have gone on for a while that Orton was contemplating retirement and what we are told I think often times is a small part of what is actually said behind closed door. I think Cowboys would like Orton to remain and made sure they kept the door open for him to stay but they also went out and got 2 QB one of them being a 6 year vet in Hanie

I hope this report is not accurate. Mainly, because I hope this organization is not stupid enough to try and talk a guy who doesnt want to play, out of retirment. If his heart is not in it, cut the chord. God, is this organization run poorly.

They didn't give up on Cole Beasley when he walked out of practice....
How poor is that?
