If he stays with the team, he'll put in the work as he usually does. He's a professional.

There's a lot of people in professional positions who don't always put in the expected time and effort and/or underachieve. It's not that uncommon and it happens in all types of work environments.

He's not going to retire and thus giveaway $3M. If he doesn't want to play, I'd make it as tense as possible for him, then cut him 5 minutes after he reports to the team.

Right ... "make it tense as possible for him" and "cut him 5 minutes after he reports" - Yes, let's be spiteful and unprofessional. That's a nice way to motivate other players.

We have zero leverage here. He doesn't want to play but so long as he reports when he is required to we aren't getting back his SB. I expect Orton may be open to some negotiation on this and the team needs to keep things collegial as they go through this process. We can play chicken on this but if he shows for training camp, we've lost all leverage.

I think he's earned a lot over his career and he does not at all seem like a big spender.
My guess is that he is set already. If his heart's not in it, it actually the honorable thing to not play vs taking a roster sport, the almost free money, or an opportunity for someone who is dreaming of this chance.

I think you're onto something in terms of how things shook out with DEN. It is like he had some type of epiphany (usually found with therapy/life-coaching, etc.) that reorganizes what's truly important for one's happiness and future. Taking a back up gig (less stress) while allowing yourself to relieve yourself of the pressure and allow you to transition your life into something different (perspective wise). This is all speculation, and feel a little like Dr. Phil slinging mud against the wall, but makes a lot of sense. Or he is a hardcore alcoholic who is prepping for the "Leaving Las Vegas" life exit (hope not). Who knows.

Get that drunk surfer off the team already...he signed to NOT play (specifically). Dude has already checked out.

It does maybe give us a read into how much doubt he has that Romo can make it through the season.
If he thinks Romo's going down, that changes the easy gig situation entirely.
Intense pressure and taking a regular beating that could leave per enact damage may not be what he wants anymore.

Wouldn't he have had the same mindset prior to last season to sign off as a back up QB when he could've competed for a starting position elsewhere? So you're saying, he was okay with coming here to get paid and not play last season, but things have changed now that he may be asked to play; deciding his physical/mental health is more important? I see the same perspective on his part (coasting for a check).

I don't really know. Just seems plausible.

Dallas has all the leverage. They can cut him after June 1st and save his 3.25m salary against the cap and in real dollars. The Signing Bonus money is just icing on the cake. If he shows up out of shape or doesn't try, they can still get him for breach and put him on the suspended/non active list and not pay him. If he skips mandatory camp days they can start fining him.

You are right that If he really doesn't want to play they should just work out a settlement, something like 1.5m. This team can easily get by without a non-motivated Kyle Orton and they may already have a comparable replacement in Weeden. They could always sign a vet like Shaun Hill that played for Linehan before.

Unfortunately, Shaun Hill is gone (signed with Rams). Slim pickens out there at QB.... Kolb? Where is barf icon when you need it...

Training camp is a hell of a thing to go through for someone who just wants to coast as a backup.

again....3 million...training camp for a QB? Is there any contact? Some running, maybe .. real tough.

Looks pretty obvious to me now that the front office saw this coming a long time ago. The whole Weeden pickup was not only insurance but their wild card that allows the Cowboys to play the waiting game for longer than Orton can. This is all about that money.

True, I'm sure it's not anywhere near as intense on the body as the other positions.

Every day I wake up I think passing on Johnny Manziel was the biggest mistake in the history of the Dallas Cowboys. Even more so with passing on Moss.
