Not sure if this particularly has been posted yet, if so move as needed.

Report: Nerve has begun to regenerate in knee of Jaylon Smith
Things just reportedly took a monumental turn for the positive when it comes to Dallas Cowboys linebacker Jaylon Smith.

The rookie has been battling to return to football after an injury suffered in January that tore both his ACL and MCL, leaving nerve damage behind. Originally predicted by many to not see the field until 2017, if then, it's being reported by former Cowboys VP of Player Personnel Gil Brandt that the nerve in Smith's knee has already begun to regenerate.

More confusion.

Nerve has been regenerating for many many months...
It took time to get to the muscle, but probably got there at least 2 months ago.
He is rehabbing most likely but that likely takes a few months

Jaylon himself told Brandt back in Oct.
And it was probably 1-2 months before that.

can someone tell me if regenerating is the same as nerve is starting to fire? i guess I assumed this is what that meant, but if this is more half-speak -->

Should I be excited now? Is it finally time?

Well that's it...

I quite frankly don't believe anything at this point, not because it couldn't happen but because the information has been... Well... Confusing.

When Smith actually participates in a practice– then I'll be exited. And truthfully I still don't think he'll be doing that until 2017... Which is OK too, because I certainly wasn't planning on seeing him out there this season.

What's it going to be then, eh?

I am glad you posted the article.

Regenerating is the nerve growing back those 6 inches.
By most comments from medical people, there is a 1 month delay after surgery and 1 inch / month after wards.
The best estimate is the nerve got to the muscle by mid August.
There are some individual variations but this timing does roughly coincidence with the Jaylon tweets and alike.

Firing is even more confusing.
The nerve cell never died.
It has been firing all this time.
The problem is if the nerve is not connected to the muscle.
The firing electrical signal does not get to the muscle, which is thus paralyzed.

Think of this as a computer, printer cable and the printer.
The injury disconnected the printer cable from the printer and damaged the last 6 inches of printer cable.
If disconnected, the computer can say print all it wants, but the printer will do nothing.
It took about 7 months for the cable to be repaired (regeneration).
Then there is additional time for reconnection to the muscle and rehabbing the muscle.

I dont have inside info, but I think Jaylon has been rehabbing for quite a while.
I am also no doctor, but have talked to phds who worked on nerve regeneration.
Hope this helps.
Like Dr Cooper said, there are no guarantees.
Dr. Cooper also said - 9-15 months needed for recover from surgery on Jan 8th.
So end of year would be in the middle of the Doc's estimate.
Also there is always concern that the recovery is not 100% but the case seems to be heading towards a good recovery.
Keep fingers crossed.
