Report: Tony Romo wants to play the Cowboys next season

In just over a month from now, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo will likely be calling a new city home. We just don’t know what team that might be or in which way Romo will move on from Dallas.

The writing has been on the wall for some time here. Youngster Dak Prescott took over for an injured Romo during the preseason and led his Cowboys to a 13-3 mark and the No. 1 overall seed in the NFC. Since then, it’s been a foregone conclusion that Romo will leave the Cowboys this offseason.

With the Denver Broncos bandied about as a potential landing spot, there promises to be other teams show interest in the former Pro Bowl quarterback. Now, according to one report, it appears that Romo wants to go to a team that faces the Cowboys next season.

“According to two NFL sources, quarterback Tony Romo would like to play for a team that faces the Cowboys next season,” Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole reported on Wednesday. “That means Kansas City, Denver, Arizona or Washington would likely be the landing spots for him depending on what happens.”

There’s a couple different things to look at here.

I would too.

I think anybody who moves on from a team would want to play that team again.

I think (and kind of hope) he ends up in Houston. They've got all the pieces, he can keep his family in Dallas and provide that Division with some much-needed relevance.

Please have a stretcher on standby.

But really, I don't put much stock in articles like this. We'll see what happens.

I'd have an issue with him playing for a division rival (unless we were to trade him). But I think it'd be cool if he went to a team that played us next season.

Come to think of it, I suppose PHI could trade a pick for him to give Wentz some time to fix his mechanics.

Why? Did you see our pass rush the last few years? Unless we truly upgrade this offseason it might be the one game he barely gets hit. :p

Honestly that doesn't surprise me. Wouldn't mind seeing it, but if it happens I am sure the Cowboys would be just fine.

Agreed.

Agreed. I actually think it would be neat to play against him next season. But I've always found big name players playing for new teams interesting.

Dallas faces the AFC West in 2017. Process of elimination there indicates that both the Los Angeles Chargers and Oakland Raiders are out of the equation. Each of those two teams have elite-level quarterbacks. This leaves Denver and Kansas City as possibilities in that division.

The second thing to look at here is the latter half of Cole’s report. Dallas finished in first place in the NFC East. This means the team will take on both Atlanta and Green Bay in 2017. Neither of those two teams are in need of a quarterback.

This leaves both the Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers in the NFC West and potentially the Washington Commanders in the NFC East as possibilities should Romo ultimately decide playing the Cowboys is important.

While Cole left out San Francisco as a potential landing spot, soon-to-be 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan could potentially change that. Romo is the type of quarterback Shanahan has worked with in the past. He fits the scheme set to be implemented in San Francisco as well.

Either way, it is rather interesting that Romo would want to actually face his former team next season. Whether that means he will is a completely different story.

That doesn't seem like a good enough reason to pick the team you're gonna play for if you're Romo. I mean, it's one game. What's his motivation the rest of the season gonna be? It's not gonna be the chiefs, and unless Cousins leaves it's not gonna be the skins either. Although that is my nightmare scenario. Just as I start belly laughing about how the skins botched it and let Cousins walk, I'll see a scroll that says "Romo, Leary sign with Commanders". Ahhh!! Ahhhhh!!

Good call on not believing it. This is typical of news media these days. Cite an unnamed source to make up a spicy confrontational storyline. The fact that the teams listed are ones with questions at QB make it so that it could look true if Romo went to one of these teams. It's an unethical writer's wet-dream. I can promise you that even if Romo wants to play against the Cowboys, he would not be whispering about it to anyone who would leak it.

I'm starting to think we need to create some kind of law against yellow journalism with some sort of repercussions.
