With the loss of Brandon Carr, Morris Claiborne, Barry Church, and J.J. Wilcox to free agency, countered only by the signing of Nolan Carroll, the Cowboys have significant holes in their back end.

As we discussed in this article on the age of the Cowboys’ position groups, the secondary also has two cornerbacks who are both 30 years old - Orlando Scandrick and Nolan Carroll. No other position group on the team has more than one starter 30 years or older.

The Cowboys barely have enough players to start in the back end, and that’s assuming either Jeff Heath or Kavon Frazier, or a combination of the two, can hold down one of the safety slots.

When looking at the snap counts for the defense from 2016, Dallas has lost:

It's as if the football gods bait and switch us Cowboy fans. We have to go strong Defensive backfield.
We grab a DE for sure but....

We need one talented DE. We need a couple secondary players. With Jones, Heath, Scandrick, Brown, and Carroll things are not dire but it is a good thing this is the best DB class in modern history.

For all of the teeth-grinding over the secondary, they would have looked MUCH better if there was even a modicum of a pass rush; the second to last play of our season tied the ineptitude of the pass rush up with a bow....get some people to apply pressure and make the QB's make quicker decisions, and thus, mistakes is what will have the defense looking great; if they can generate a pass rush from the interior, then our average outside guys will stop QB's from rolling out and getting of the ball early....

Give me a guy like hankins on top of what we have; we will see what they can do....sprinkle in a 1st round pick on the best pass rush guy that is available...shoot Gregory...tell DLaw it is put up or get out time....things like that

It is obvious with the addition of Carroll and the migration of Carr and Claiborne that they are going to start playing a lot more zone.

DE is still the biggest need on this team by far and also helps the secondary at the same time. Our secondary wasn't elite with the players we just let sign elsewhere and I'm not convinced outside of SS we're in a much worse spot. Scandrick, Brown, and Carroll aren't superstars either but are capable of being a very solid trio... Fix the pass rush and you'll see a big boost in play from the secondary...

by numbers or lack there of the secondary has become the biggest need.
We have mediocre DE mainly 5 techs
We have lost our three DB's . we have replaced one. we need DB's
do I hear any objections ,next case

Yes it's real but kinda sorta not. The Cowboys do not have the cap to take him on and then there's the case of why would you?

He's a dawg..He's a perfect fit in our scheme..We could make room..But I definitely wouldn't part with a first round pick

To lose all 4 starting members of your secondary seems unprecedented to me. To think some rookies and UDFAs around draft time are going to come in and blow the doors off the NFL is about as optimistic as I have ever seen. Granted, they weren't AllPros and Scandrick and Brown are going to move up and Heath may be serviceable, but this will be a master stroke if McClay and SJones can pull it off with all the other priority needs we have (RT, DE).

We have fans that care more about the secondary than the pass rush.

We lost to Green Bay the last two playoff appearances due to a lack of a pass rush.

Focus on improving the front four. Sign solid affordable corners and safety's in free agency.
